About 20 miles east of Tampa lies Dover, Florida, a quiet, semi-rural suburb where country roads shaded by Spanish Moss-draped oaks meander past homes nestled in verdant farmland. "That area is surrounded by strawberry fields," says Cindy Maher, a local real estate associate with Ling Realty and a Tampa Bay-area resident for over 20 years. "It's a good place for people who are looking for land; for people who want something other than a subdivision with an HOA."

Despite the Dover area's pastoral locale, there are several major freeways nearby, including Highway 574, Highway 92, Highway 60 and Interstate 4, making destinations like downtown Tampa, Lakeland Linder International Airport and South Florida Baptist Hospital accessible in 15 to 30 minutes.

You'll find an eclectic mix of houses dotted across the Dover countryside, from modest manufactured and charming ranch-style homes to modern Colonials and newly constructed contemporary farmhouse styles. Most homes sit on 1 or more acres, range in size from 600 to almost 5,000 square feet and list anywhere from $200,000 to over $1.5 million. "The homes tend to be a little more reasonably priced than other areas for the amount of land you get," Maher says. "So, I think price is a factor. The homes in the area under $500,000 are a lot easier to sell."

Area children attend schools in the Hillsborough County Public Schools district, including Bailey Elementary, rated a C-plus by Niche, for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and Turkey Creek Middle, which also receives a C-plus from Niche, for grades six through eight. Next, students move to Strawberry Crest High, Niche's No. 2 standout Tampa-area high school, earning an A rating.

After a long week of school, take the kids to Dover District Park for a playground playdate, a bike ride around the lake, a game of HORSE on the basketball court or a snack under the shady picnic shelter. Speaking of horses, riders and walkers alike can enjoy the 7 miles of equestrian and hiking trails at the Sidney Dover Conservation Park, and for local athletic teams, there's the William Owen Pass Sports Complex, featuring baseball and soccer fields, a sand volleyball court and concession stand. If you're looking for a unique experience with the family, check out nearby Dinosaur World off of Interstate 4, where you can walk among towering life-sized models of T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and more. You can also dig for fossils or experience Doom of the Dinosaurs, an exhibit featuring authentic, life-sized casts of dinosaur skeletons discovered by renowned paleontologist John Hankla.

If later you find yourself with a dinosaur-sized appetite, stop by Nidia's Latin Grill on Highway 574 for some Mexican-style wood-fire-grilled chicken and ribs, or head to Highway 60 toward the Valrico area, where you'll find a slew of restaurants, including The New York Diner, a family-run spot serving classic diner fare like pancake short stacks and country-fried steak with eggs. While on Highway 60, grab some groceries at the Winn-Dixie, upgrade your boots at Russell's Western Wear, or pick up some fresh strawberries or a whipped cream-topped strawberry shortcake from the Parkesdale Farm Market on the way home to your countryside Dover retreat.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
