Dracut is a hit with young families
Dracut, about 30 minutes north of Boston, is a small town with plenty to offer. “It’s great for young families — there are so many community activities for kids,” says Jackie Theriault, Realtor with LAER Realty Partners and resident of Dracut for more than 30 years. “Housing is more affordable than other towns near Boston, and you’ll get a larger home and more land for your money.” Residents can access several parks, a nearby lake and a 1,000-acre state forest. In addition, a variety of locally owned restaurants and taverns provide ample opportunities for an evening out with family or friends. Stately maples line the narrow residential streets, giving the community an established feel.

Sports fields, hiking trails and boating in and around Dracut
Veteran’s Memorial Park, just a few blocks from the Parker Memorial Library, is a popular gathering spot, equipped with a splash pad, playground and soccer field. Across from the fire station, locals can find softball fields and a skate park in the Michael J. Monahan Memorial Park. The Dracut Recreation Department also offers several programs for area youth, including an NFL Flag Football program, which competed in the national championship in Las Vegas in 2023. For some time in nature, the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest is a popular spot for hiking, as well as hunting and horseback riding. In the summer months, locals can boat and fish on Lake Mascuppic. The town also has an 18-hole golf course, which is located at Four Oaks Country Club.

Dracut Old Home Day draws the community together
Each September, residents gather at the grounds of the schools on Lakeview Avenue to celebrate Dracut Old Home Day. The event involves a 5K race and “all sorts of activities for kids,” Theriault says. The town also has an annual Memorial Day parade, and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Church hosts a dinner dance each spring.

In Dracut, there are several family-owned Italian restaurants for enjoying an evening out. Scola’s serves a variety of pasta, seafood and steak dishes and offers outdoor dining. Mama’s Italian Restaurant is another local favorite. “One of the nicer restaurants in town is Grazie,” Theriault says. “It has a beautiful location on the golf course.” Dracut also offers a variety of other culinary styles, including Lanxang Star Restaurant, where locals can taste Thai and Laotian specialties, and The Village Inn, known for its hand-cut steaks. At Shaw Farm, a family-owned dairy farm, residents can pick up milk, baked goods and fresh ice cream. For larger shopping trips, locals can head to Hannaford on Pleasant Street or Market Basket in nearby Lowell.

Several public schools housed along Lakeview Avenue
Students in town are part of Dracut Public Schools, a district that includes four elementary schools, one middle school and a high school. Four of the schools, including Englesby Elementary School, Brookside Elementary School and the middle and high schools, are located in the same complex off Lakeview Avenue. There is a plan in the works to build a new pickleball and tennis facility within the complex — it will be open for community use during non-school hours. Brookside Elementary School, rated a C-plus on Niche, hosts an annual walk-a-thon to benefit the school’s parent-teacher organization. Students at Richardson Middle School, which earns a B-minus score, recently began a quarterly student-run newspaper that includes interviews with new teachers and a few recipes. At B-rated Dracut Senior High School, students may participate in extracurricular activities such as show choir, robotics club and Poetry Out Loud. Those who wish to continue their education can find the University of Massachusetts Lowell located about 2 miles south of Dracut.
