New developments complement an outdoorsy lifestyle
A narrow, three-square-mile strip of real estate hugs the edge of Lake Superior on the northern fringe of the Duluth metro area. Residents of North Shore forgo the more established and tight-knit look of downtown-adjacent suburbs and their national-brand retailers, gridded streets and side-by-side housing. Recent years have brought to North Shore an influx of architecturally complex and higher-priced homes with forests on one side and Lake Superior on the other. “It’s all about whether it’s on the lake,” says Realtor Brok Hansmeyer, a Realtor with Re/Max Results and the lead at Zenith City Group. “You have some older homes that are in that $300,000 to $500,000 range, and you have some beautiful houses on the lake that get pretty expensive.” Homes cluster around Voyageur Highway, a thoroughfare that cuts through the area towards Downtown Duluth in one direction and more wilderness in the other. Unparalleled views of the lake come in two forms: from the edge of the lake at parks and scenic overlooks and also from atop nearby Moose Mountain, a rocky crag rising as tall as a 50-story tower.

Residents have the lake and the mountains in their backyards
One of the neighborhood's two waterfront access points is Kitchi Gammi Park, which features a strip of beach alongside an open pavilion and swing sets for kids. The small parking lot fits a few cars for a Saturday family outing. Farther up the shore is Brighton Beach Park. It’s not the typical sandy beach, but the rocky terrain makes for an interesting walk. North Shore has nine scenic spots for stopping and admiring the lake's edge, but some prefer the road less traveled. “There’s a beach at 42nd Avenue East called Hidden Beach,” says Hansmeyer. “There’s a trail you keep walking to get there. Locals know about it, but Google won’t tell you about it.” Views of the lake at its edge are one thing, but nearby Moose Mountain is truly something else. Here, migrating birds of prey pass through Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve. “It’s a sweet view from up there,” says Hansmeyer. Birdwatchers flock to the area annually around September and October for the best chance of catching these species in flight.

Older ranch styles meet new contemporary estates
Unlike many of the suburbs closer to downtown, 20th-century homes are not the most sought-after. Ranch styles hugging the edge of Voyageur Highway are less-extravagant options fetching around $200,000 to $470,000. New construction has overtaken North Shore’s market with brand-new modern and contemporary builds, some with vaulted windows or irregular roof shapes. Due to the untapped reserves of land farther from town, lot sizes for these newer homes start at around 1 acre and reach as large as 4. These vary widely in price between $635,000 and $1.15 million.

A bite to eat means a short drive
Because the neighborhood is so far removed from Duluth’s suburbs, shopping and dining opportunities are few and far between. A short drive along Voyageur Highway in either direction yields a restaurant or two. Lake Superior Brewing is a popular local spot that has live music acts on Wednesday nights. For a casual slice, there's Sammy’s Pizza, a family-owned chain with community roots. Amity Coffee is a tiny hole-in-the-wall with a welcoming vibe. Super One Foods has the grocery basics covered, but it can be easy to miss Falastin, a deli that serves fresh Palestinian food. For some of what Downtown has to offer, the drive into the city's core is about 10 miles.

Voyageur Highway runs into Downtown Duluth
Voyageur Highway runs parallel to Lake Superior, making for a straightforward 10-mile, 15-minute drive southwest to Downtown Duluth. The Duluth Transit Authority does not extend as far as North Shore; instead, it stops short at the intersection of Superior Street and Glenwood Street. The same is true for traveling to the Duluth International Airport, which is not feasible by bus. Residents can reach the airport by car in a half-hour long, 17-mile trip.
