Older homes line the streets of this wooded Duluth community
Driving the 2 miles along Piedmont Avenue toward Lake Superior, it could be easy to miss Piedmont Heights, a Duluth neighborhood with no stoplights and one restaurant. “One of the cool things about Duluth is that we do have neighborhoods, but there are dead-end roads all over town that have huge rock faces and beautiful homes,” says Realtor Tom Acton of Re/Max Results. In such a neighborhood, residents do without national retail brands or extensive dining options. A hike along Merritt Creek or a round of golf are possible, though, without going too far from residential properties often dating back 100 years. Those who feel lost in Piedmont Heights need only stop at Skyline Parkway’s rocky overlook to get their bearings and absorb the view of greater Duluth.

Spending time on the trail or atop Skyline Parkway Overlook
One of the community’s small green spaces is Piedmont Park. This spot features a playground for kids to explore and athletic space for baseball, softball and other sports. In true Duluth fashion, there’s also an outdoor ice rink that is filled and frozen over in the winter. Golfers head to the nearby Enger Park Golf Course. The staff offers daily rates and calendar reservations, so all are welcome to test their swing on the 27-hole course, which is divided into nine hole courses. After playing a game or practicing on the driving range, players can stop into the clubhouse for a burger and a brew. Hikers aren’t excluded, thanks to the intertwining trails bordering the neighborhood’s west side. These paths both cross and loop around Merritt Creek, coming close to the Skyline Parkway Overlook. This rocky outcropping is where hikers stop to appreciate the views and capture a screensaver. “There’s so much in Duluth that people forget we have a lot here,” says Realtor Megan Wilson of Re/Max Results.

Traditional and ranch-style homes in Piedmont Heights
Irregular residential streets branch outwardly from the neighborhood’s thoroughfare, Piedmont Avenue. Piedmont Heights’ inventory is comprised mainly of early to mid-20th-century traditional and ranch-style homes. In typical suburban fashion, home lots are more petite and snugly arranged, rarely exceeding a quarter of an acre. Buyers can expect to spend as little as $120,000 for a two-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot home or as much as $570,000 for a four-bedroom home exceeding 2,000 square feet. Despite this somewhat wide gap in pricing, buyers will find that no one style is exclusive to the high or low end.

Sitting down for a burger or making a short grocery trip
Single-family housing and open forests encompass so much of South End’s landscape that only one restaurant lies within its boundaries. Big Daddy’s Burgers has old-school diner vibes, serving breakfast staples and milkshakes alongside their burgers. Less than 2 miles up the road sits Azteca’s Mexican Grill for when the mood calls for a plate of enchiladas, a bucket of Coronas, or both. Azteca’s is part of a larger commercial center, which contains an Aldi and a Super One Foods for basic grocery and household needs.
