Though the land had been long-inhabited by different Algonquian-speaking tribes, the tale of Dumfries as its known today begins around 1690, when Richard Gibson built a gristmill on Quantico Creek. He was among the first to see opportunity along the creek, which feeds into the Potomac, and Scottish merchants were soon to follow. Dumfries was officially chartered in 1749 and became the second leading port in Colonial America; today, it’s the longest continuously-chartered town in Virginia. Dumfries encompasses 1.54 square miles along I-95, with a convenient location to military bases, Washington, DC, and major shopping destinations.

Homes in Dumfries range from 1930s cottages to 1950s split-levels to brand-new town houses and single-family homes. Prices start in the mid- to upper-$200,000s for a town house in an older building and rise as high as the upper-$600,000s for a large new-construction colonial-style house.

Students attend Prince William County Public Schools such as Dumfries Elementary School, Graham Park Middle School, and Potomac High School. Potomac High offers allows students to pursue an Advanced International Certificate of Education, offered by a division of the University of Cambridge and meant to benefit students in the college application process.

Dumfries has multiple parks to spend a Saturday outdoors. Ginn Memorial Park has a playground, swings, and basketball courts for kids to burn some energy. Merchant Park is on the site of Civil War encampments and is host to the Weems-Botts Museum. This museum, maintained by Dumfries’s very active historical society, exists to tell the story of Dumfries. History buffs will want to come out for Revolutionary War and Civil War reenactments held here periodically.

Prince William Forest Park, the largest protected natural area in the Washington, DC, metropolitan region, is the place to go when you want to spend the whole day getting lost on endless meandering trails while looking for local flora and fauna, orienteering, or walking the dog. Kids can enjoy the playground and work toward their Junior Ranger Corps certificate and badge.

Residents in Dumfries have easy access to the necessities, and then some. “Everything is so close once you live in this area,” says Susie Branco Zinn, Realtor and Associate Broker at RE/MAX Gateway. “Route 1, I-95 — everything is right off it.” Stonebridge Potomac Town Center is one major retail destination located about 5 miles north on I-95 where you can groceries at Wegman’s or dinner and a movie at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Just a little farther north is Potomac Mills, home to IKEA, Costco, and multiple outlet stores. Closer to home, Walmart, Aldi, and Food Lion can all be found in a short stretch of Route 1. The Dumfries Farmers Market is a new event held by the town where residents can get local goods at reasonable prices, and is expected to grow in the coming years. And a new casino in town, Rosie’s Gaming Emporium, has caught the attention of local developers. “They feel like that’s going to bring in a lot of people, so we’re starting to see new shopping center developments being built up,” Branco Zinn says.

And when it’s time for a change of scenery, I-95 is your ticket to Richmond, Washington, DC, and beyond. From there, the rest of the story is yours to tell.
