Country Club Heights
New Traditional and Modern Transitional homes on landscaped lots
The neighborhood’s single-family homes line Country Club Drive, a wide road lined with sidewalks and shaded by trees, which forms a large circle. Several streets branch off, ending in cul-de-sacs. Homes are New Traditional and Modern Transitional in style, featuring a mix of vinyl and brick siding. Columns frame entryways, and short concrete driveways lead into attached two-car garages. Lots are typically under a third acre with neatly trimmed grass, blooming shrubs and ornamental trees. Properties rarely come on the market in Country Club Heights. Four sold between February and November 2024, with prices ranging from $535,000 for about 2,500 square feet to $610,000 for about 3,300 square feet. The neighborhood is managed by a homeowners association, with monthly fees of around $35.Exploring Eno River State Park
The 4,000-acre Eno River State Park is close by. While shallow, the Eno River is popular for fishing and sightseeing. “That’s a big reason why people come to this area. There are tons of trails for hiking and mountain biking. The river goes all the way through from the west side to the north side of town,” Slone says. Umstead Pines at Willowhaven Golf & Swim Club sits adjacent to the neighborhood, featuring a public 18-hole course designed by prominent golf architect George Cobb. Club members can enjoy laps in an outdoor pool and play tennis with views of Willowhaven Lake. Valley Springs Park is in the area for disc golf and team sports, including baseball and soccer. It also offers a playground for children 12 and under.Hillandale Elementary’s Atten-Dance
The neighborhood’s assigned schools start with Hillandale Elementary. Earning a B-minus overall rating from the Niche, the school rewards excellent attendance with a big dance party in December. George L. Carrington Middle gets a C-plus and offers an Advanced Academics program for excelling students. Riverside High receives a B-plus. “They have an engineering concentration, but you also have several opt-in schools,” says Steed Rollins, a lifelong resident of Durham and a Realtor with Peak, Swirles & Cavallito Properties. “Durham School of the Arts is downtown and is a very popular school. Durham Academy has been around for a long time. It’s the premiere independent school. There’s also Duke School and Trinity Academy.”Friends hang out at Bennett Pointe Grill & Bar
Bennett Pointe, a small shopping center roughly 4 miles south of the neighborhood, is home to a community staple: Bennett Pointe Grill & Bar. Open since the late 1990s, the restaurant is known for its seafood and relaxed atmosphere. “People go to gather together and eat a good meal. I’ve been there quite a few times. You’ll see the same faces,” says Slone, who adds that China Star, a few doors down, is the spot for Chinese takeout. Five miles east of the neighborhood, Food Lion and Harris Teeter anchor the shopping centers clustered at the intersection of Horton and Guess roads, which host familiar retailers and chains, from Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Family Dollar to Starbucks and Pizza Hut.Short commutes to Duke University
A neighborhood on the city's northwestern edge, Country Club Heights is a car-dependent community without access to public transportation. Commuters making the 8-mile drive to Duke University and Duke University Hospital take back roads to work. The Durham Freeway and Interstate 85 are nearby to reach downtown Durham, about 9 miles away, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport, a little over 20 miles southeast. Slone says the roughly 15-mile commute to Chapel Hill usually takes less than 30 minutes.Crime
The risk for crime is significantly low in Country Club Heights. The neighborhood receives a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4 out of 10.
