Historic houses and brand new builds in Eno
Eno has a variety of housing styles, including smaller ranch-style houses and large traditional or transitional builds. “There are historic homes, but we’re also seeing newer builds pop up for the people moving in from Durham,” Ball says. Prices range from $245,000 for a two-bedroom 1980s home to $1.4 million for a five-bedroom house built in the 2020s. Secluded, narrow roads lead to private cul-de-sacs. Sidewalks are uncommon. Houses sit on large lots where mature trees provide privacy.Exploring the trails at Eno River State Park
Eno River State Park offers over 30 miles of trails varying in length and ranging from easy to expert in difficulty. “The hiking is excellent; you can pick a different trail each day,” Ball says. Park-goers can bring a picnic basket for an afternoon lunch at the Cole Mill access point or pack a tent for overnight camping at the Few Fords access point. The Eno River provides a challenging course for kayaking, thanks to the swift but shallow water. Anglers can fish for largemouth bass from the shore, while birdwatchers search for native species. Occoneechee Golf Club is an 18-hole course with a driving range and putting area that borders U.S. Route 70.Orange County schools partnering with community colleges
River Park Elementary, formerly Cameron Park Elementary, earns a B-plus rating on Niche and has a 13-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Some students in the northern part of the neighborhood may be zoned for Pathways Elementary, which scores a B-minus and also has a 13-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Orange Middle, rated B-plus, was formerly known as C.W. Stanford Middle. Right next door, Orange High serves just over 1,300 students. It receives a B-plus overall and is part of the Career and College Promise. The program allows motivated students to earn college credits with waived tuition at Durham Technical Community College or Alamance Community College.Raising funds through annual celebrations
The annual Festival for the Eno takes place every July to raise funds for the Eno River Association. Sixty bands perform across four stages, while attendees browse local artisan vendors and enjoy cuisine from local restaurants and food trucks. The festival celebrated its 45th year in 2024.Easy acess to major roads and cities
Residents can hop on highway 70 or interstates 40 or 85 within minutes. Hillsborough is anywhere from a 2-mile to a 12-mile drive, depending on the starting point in Eno. It takes 10 to 20 miles up I-85 to reach downtown Durham or Research Triangle Park by car. “You’re at the line of Orange County and Durham right there,” Boyd says. “It’s an easy drive in either direction.” It will take slightly longer to reach Raleigh-Durham International Airport, closer to 25 to 35 miles. A car is necessary for getting around due to the spread-out nature of the area and a lack of public transportation.North Carolina barbecue and national chains in Hillsborough
“We have smaller communities that rely on Hillsborough, even though we're just a small hub ourselves,” says Amanda Boyd, executive director of The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough. Its small downtown is lined with boutiques, gift shops and independent art galleries. Hillsborough BBQ Company serves pit-cooked barbecue and traditional regional specialties, including slaws and corn pudding. Eno River Brewing has a menu of beer, wine, slushies and limited snacks. While Hillsborough has national chains like Walmart and Aldi, locals can also pick up organically grown fruits and vegetables at farm stands, such as Walker Farm and Broken Spoke Farm. On Fridays and Saturdays in the summer, Broken Spoke sells soft-serve ice cream in fun flavors like cantaloupe sorbet and vanilla swirl.Crime
Eno has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
