A north Durham neighborhood in a period of growth
Named after one of its main thoroughfares, Latta Road is a north Durham neighborhood slowly shifting as home builders and developers eye its wide-open spaces. This once-rural enclave offers larger lots than neighborhoods closer to downtown, as it used to lie outside the city limits. “You’re seeing an increase in density,” says Jeanette Hussey, a Durham native and Realtor with West & Woodall Real Estate, who adds that residents here are diverse in age. “Because there are a lot of one-level homes, you get a lot of retirees who are relocating. You get families, too, because the area’s schools are close by.” Bordered by the Eno River to the south, Latta Road offers quick access to waterside trails and a popular summer swimming hole. This normally peaceful neighborhood is currently abuzz with construction crews as a new development rises at the corner of Guess and Latta roads.

Single-family homes near the Eno River, the new Latta Park development
Tall pines and oaks shade the single-family homes lining Latta Road’s wide, unmarked streets. Ranch-style homes and split-levels, primarily built between the 1960s and 1980s, are most common, but the neighborhood also features rows of New Traditional homes from the early 2000s as well as new construction. Properties are usually around a half-acre. Paved or gravel driveways frame spacious front yards, many of them adorned with flower beds and manicured shrubs. Most homes fall between $300,000 and $500,000, but newly built homes range from $725,000 to $850,000. FEMA flood maps indicate that some properties along Crooked Creek rest in special flood hazard areas.
The new 30-acre master-planned Latta Park development will add nearly 180 townhomes to the neighborhood, along with a grocery store-anchored shopping center and a park. Some of the first townhomes are expected to hit the market by late 2025. “We’re told it’s going to have shops and local restaurants, but they’re not targeting franchise places,” Hussey says.

Connecting with nature at West Point on the Eno
Homes in Latta Road are at most a mile-and-a-half away from the Eno River. West Point on the Eno Park provides an access point nearby. The over 400-acre park features a historic mill and the Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography. Its scenic trails pass by summer swimming spots like Sennett’s Hole, a spot that, according to local lore, is the site of a never-found pot of gold believed to be buried at the bottom. Hussey says families typically visit area schools for playgrounds and ballfields, but Old Farm Road Park, which offers a large athletic field and basketball courts, is a short drive from the neighborhood. It’s slated to get a new playground once the city has funding. The Eno Valley Swim & Racquet Club is next door. Durham has several golf courses, including the public Umstead Pines at Willowhaven. The 18-hole course is around 4 miles west of the Latta Road.

Shopping and dining options abound
Small shopping centers dot U.S. Route 501 and Guess Road, hosting grocery stores like Food Lion and Harris Teeter. Besides familiar fast-food chains, local restaurants nearby include Silver Spoon Restaurant, which has served classic diner fare in its casual digs since 2007, and Dogwood Bar and Grill, fusing New American fare with Argentinian flavors. Hussey highlights the Dog House, a tiny, doghouse-shaped walk-up with a drive-through, “They have great hot dogs and have been there for a while.” The restaurant sits at the end of one of the closest retail strips to the neighborhood, Eno Square, which hosts a station for the Durham Police Department. Latta Road has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average.
