Independent single-family homes and several subdivisions of differing architectural styles dot Leigh Village, offering homebuyers a range of properties and prices. Along Farrington Road, midcentury homes are tucked into sprawling woods with long driveways, mostly concealed from the road, while Woodland Acres offers traditional ranch-style homes lining close-knit residential streets. These properties range from $380,000 to $500,000. The 21st century Craftsman-style homes and Modern Transitional designs in the Villas at Culp Arbor 55+ community and Chapel Run fall between $500,000 and $800,000. Blenheim Woods’ custom builds start at around $900,000 and go to nearly $1 million. At the top of the market, the Spanish Eclectic mansions filling the private Maida Vale community cost between $1 million and $3 million. "Almost every house on the market gets multiple offers in one day," says Christy Kimbro, a Realtor with Fonville Morisey in Chapel Hill. "It helps that the area is close to Duke University and Research Triangle Park." Durham Public Schools uses a lottery system for families applying to the district’s magnet and specialty schools. Creekside Elementary earns a B-minus overall rating from Niche. The school builds a close community through regular events such as literacy nights, where students enjoy story time, and an annual talent show. Sherwood Githens Middle gets a B and offers fine arts from theater and orchestra to band and chorus. With a B-plus on Niche, Charles E. Jordan High has a student population of nearly 2,000. It offers various varsity sports as well as a drama program with seasonal performances. Nearby private options include Montessori Community School, which enrolls kindergarten through eighth grade with a curriculum focused on emotional, social and academic nourishment. The Streets at Southpoint is a name-brand shopping destination just 6 miles east along Interstate 40. The mall has more than 160 stores paired with an AMC Theater and chain eateries offering a casual bite while shopping. A collection of shopping centers line U.S. Route 501 closer to home. Walmart Supercenter anchors New Hope Commons, featuring Burlington and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Eastgate Crossing is home to Aldi and Trader Joe’s, as well as unique eats like Kipo’s Greek Taverna and Guglhupf Bake Shop, specializing in breads and sweet and savory pastries. Chapel Hill Country Club fills the forest west of Leigh Village. Members can enjoy an 18-hole golf course, a swimming pool and a racquet sports program. South of the club, Golf fans visit the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Finley Golf Club to catch a Tar Heels golfing tournament. Walking trails and picnic shelters surround a central pond at Meadowmont Park, offering indoor courts for pickup basketball. One of the closest playgrounds is at Burlington Park. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is a regional summertime hangout. Located 17 miles south of the neighborhood, the park provides boat ramps as well as lakefront access for swimming, fishing and paddling. Camping and hiking are also popular around the tree-lined lake.Leigh Farm Park is a popular spot for disc golf and hosts the Piedmont Wildlife Center, an organization offering daytime nature camps for children across the Triangle. “They’re held at a state or county parks. Kids learn to respect wildlife and care for the environment while exploring the outdoors,” says Nick DiColandrea, the wildlife center’s executive director. The organization has over a dozen native North Carolina animals, some visiting classrooms around the region. “Red shoulder hawks, barred owls, snakes, possums. It’s all for the excitement of kids who’ve never heard an owl hoot before,” he says. While not all animals are displayed at the center, visitors to Leigh Park can view their birds of prey enclosures outside.
Commuting to Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh
Area highways loop around Leigh Village, helping commuters reach destinations around the Triangle. Interstate 40 provides a quick route to Research Triangle Park, a significant regional employment hub about 10 miles southeast of the neighborhood. State Route 54 provides an alternative route to reach Raleigh and Raleigh-Durham International Airport, 14 miles south. Most folks rely on U.S. Route 501 for the less than 9-mile trip to downtown Durham. No highways are needed to get into Chapel Hill, hosting UNC Hospitals, a top employer in the immediate area. Neighborhood cyclists can use the dedicated lane along Ephesus Church Road, which connects to the Lower Booker Creek Trail in Chapel Hill.Crime is lower than the national average
