New Hope
Interstates 40 and 85 connect to Chapel Hill, Durham, RTP
Hillsborough is within about 7 miles of most homes in New Hope, a drive that typically takes 15 minutes. Roberts says traffic around here is hardly ever a concern for residents, except for commuters heading to/from Durham. Downtown Durham is about 12 miles southeast, while Duke University Hospital, a major employer in the area, is only about 8 miles southeast. In light traffic, the drive to both destinations takes less than 20 minutes. Chapel Hill is also within a 20-minute drive of New Hope, at about 9 miles south. Interstate 85 runs east-west along the neighborhood’s north side. Interstate 40 runs northwest-southeast along the community’s southwest side, connecting down to RTP about 20 miles away. “RTP stands for Research Triangle Park, which is a big research and industry hub for the Triangle region,” says Realtor Carla Sevilla of Chanticleer Properties, who has been working with clients in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill since 2001. She observes that RTP companies are among the biggest employers in the area.Surrounding parks offer rustic woodland hiking
Eno River State Park’s Fews Ford Access is just a few miles north of New Hope. There’s paddling and fishing available on the river, as well as 13 miles of scenic, tree-shaded hiking trails stretching from the Fews Ford Access. Duke University owns and maintains more than 7,000 acres of natural forests and fields in Duke Forest, on New Hope’s southwest side. The preserved land stretches across Durham, Orange and Alamance counties, and has been used for teaching and research since 1931. Duke Forest visitors can take guided tours and participate in volunteer opportunities. There’s even a hiking trail that extends south to Hollow Rock Nature Park, connecting to more woodland trails and open fields. Part of Hollow Rock Nature Park’s trail system follows New Hope Creek. Johnston Mill Nature Preserve, west of Hollow Rock along the creek, features nearly 300 acres of additional forests and fields for hiking.Midcentury ranch-style homes and new builds on oversized lots
Homes here often overlook large, tree-shaded lots. It’s common for properties to stretch for several acres around the neighborhood’s older homes; new builds tend to have smaller lots, though they’re still considered oversized when compared to those within city limits. Roberts says New Hope has experienced a couple housing booms – one between the 1940s and ‘50s, another in the ‘70s and ‘80s – and it’s on the cusp of yet another right now, as homebuyers are increasingly interested in the community’s convenient, but quiet location. Prices for well-maintained and minimally updated classic ranch-style, Traditional and split-level homes run anywhere from about $370,000 to a little more than $550,000. Larger Colonial Revival and farmhouse-style estates that have been fully renovated with modern finishes can go for between $1.3 and $1.7 million. Roberts observes that most homes in New Hope are not on city water/sewer lines. “It’ll be well water and septic tanks out here, but as it grows that could change soon.”IB Programme for upperclassmen at Cedar Ridge High
Many students here go to New Hope Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, between preschool and fifth grade. Older kids may go to A.L. Stanback Middle, which gets a B-minus, and Cedar Ridge High, which receives an A-minus. Cedar Ridge offers an International Baccalaureate Programme to juniors and seniors. High schoolers are also encouraged to take advantage of dual enrollment programs provided in partnership with Alamance Community College and Durham Technical Community College. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, just south of the neighborhood, offers 82 undergraduate and 66 doctoral degree programs. The public research university is one of the oldest in the country, and the only one in the U.S. to award degrees in the 18th century. Duke University and North Carolina Central University (NCCU) are close by, too, in Durham. Duke is a private research university with more than 50 undergraduate programs and more than 80 graduate/professional programs. NCCU is a historically Black public university with more than 140 undergraduate and graduate fields of study.
Not far from Hillsborough retail and restaurants
There’s not much for shopping and dining within New Hope; according to Roberts, most locals head to nearby Hillsborough to go out to eat or pick up groceries. Walmart Supercenter, Aldi and Food Lion provide grocery staples and other everyday essentials in Hillsborough, off Interstate 85 just northwest of New Hope. Nearby, Hillsborough BBQ Company is a popular spot for North Carolina-style, pit-cooked barbecue. Eno River Brewing opened in 2023 and has quickly become a Hillsborough hot spot for craft beer and local food trucks.
