Small town pride at Summer Fest
Each year locals look forward to four days of fun at Dyer Summer Fest, which includes carnival rides, midway games, food vendors, a beer garden, live entertainment and fireworks. Dyer is also home to the historic Meyer’s Castle, a Jacobethan marvel built for herbologist Joseph E. Meyer in the late 1920s. Locals explore the gardens and an impressive auto exhibit during Cars at the Castle, a car show hosted on the grounds.

Drivers take Illinois Route 394 North to reach Chicago Midway International Airport in 37 miles or hit Interstate 94 West to continue to downtown Chicago.
One Amtrak train departs for the big city each morning from Dyer Station, and new opportunities for big city convenience are on their way thanks to the West Lake Corridor Project. “One of the things that homebuyers often commented on was that Northwest Indiana doesn’t have the best commuter rail compared to Illinois,” Moon says. “You’re either driving in and paying for parking or driving across the border to the commuter rail there, which is actually closer than the South Shore Line along Lake Michigan. A new station is being built in Dyer, which will connect into South Shore so people who live here will be able to hop on the train and commute very quickly. They’ve been talking about doing it for forever, and now it’s actually happening!”

When it’s time to go grocery shopping, Dyer residents can choose between Jewel-Osco, centrally located in town, or Walt’s Food Center nearby. When they’d rather leave the cooking up to someone else, they head to Doc’s Smokehouse Dyer for award-winning, slow-cooked southern BBQ and a wide selection of whiskeys and craft beers. White Rhino Bar and Grill is an American bistro with a lively atmosphere that hosts trivia, bingo, live music and canvas painting. Eclectic art lines the walls at Jelly Pancake House, a hole-in-the-wall brunch joint with a full bar. Many more chain and local shopping and dining options a quick drive away in nearby St. John and Schererville.

Those interested in moving out to Dyer may face some competition getting in. “Our market has been buoyed,” Moon stresses. “It’s insanely hot because of a mass exodus from Illinois. There are significantly lower property taxes in Indiana, and when you have someone moving from Chicago, they still want to be close to work and family and this is both. It’s a hotbed for sure.”
