Buena Vista’s rattling train tracks and persistent horns
Train horns are just a part of life in the Spanish-speaking neighborhood of Buena Vista. This little northern neighborhood in the border town of Eagle Pass Texas is close to the Rio Grande River and features a railroad track that runs through its heart. “Since we’re a border town, there are a lot of imports and exports,” says Yolanda Rivas, broker and owner of Savir Real Estate Services. “Companies send raw material to Mexico, then import [the products] back to the U.S. and Canada.” Aside from rattling tracks and the occasional block party, the neighborhood is a quiet place to come home to.
Buena Vista is home to several rail routes connecting Texas and other states.

Cottages, ranch-style homes and longtime neighbors
With only three homes currently listed for sale and just two sold in the past year, information on Buena Vista’s housing market is limited. What is clear is that most homeowners are in for the long haul. Longtime neighbors are often longtime friends in the small community. Residents live in ranch-style homes and cottages on modest fenced-in lots. Aside from the duplexes, driveways are standard. Still, parallel-parked cars line many streets, as do mature mesquite trees. The rough price range is between $200,000 and $250,000.

Eagle Pass High offers dual credit coursework
Buena Vista students attend schools in the Eagle Pass Independent School District, including Nellie May Glass Elementary, which is graded B-minus on Niche and is less than a mile from the neighborhood. Eagle Pass Junior High is graded C-plus, and Eagle Pass High earns a B. The high school offers Advanced Placement and dual credit courses.
Mundo Nuevo Park within walking distance of Buena Vista
There are two pocket parks within walking distance of the neighborhood. Mundo Nuevo Park is next to the Roy P. Benavidez Center, which hosts after-school programs. The park is popular for families with young children thanks to its swing set, double slide and other play structures. On the other side of the neighborhood, Kelso Park got a new playground in 2022. The space has multipurpose fields, often used for pickup soccer games, a running track and a basketball court. Up Kelso Drive, Eagle Pass Swimming Complex is a popular summer hangout.

Only a mile from The Wagon Wheel
Buena Vista is close to many local eateries, one of which has received considerable attention in the last year. The Wagon Wheel appeared on Texas Eats, a popular San Antonio-based television series hosted by David Elder. The family-owned restaurant holds the People’s Choice award title for the city’s best barbecue and is less than a mile from Buena Vista. Next door, Mi Ranchito serves authentic Mexican breakfast and lunch fare. For household necessities, Dollar General is just over a mile away. La Michoacana Meat Market is nearby, too, offering a selection of Latin groceries and made-to-order meals. Chain shopping and dining options, from Chili’s and Long John Silver’s to H-E-B and Walmart, are just a couple miles away on Bibb Avenue. “Just know that everyone speaks Spanish,” Rivas says. “Even when you go up to a drive-through.”

Eagle Pass is car-dependent
Eagle Pass is largely car-dependent; however, Southwest Area Regional Transit has two routes with stops in the city. The closest major metro is San Antonio, 140 miles away. An international bridge is just 2 miles south of the neighborhood on U.S. Route 57. The nearest airport, Maverick County International Airport, is 10 miles north. Duncan Regional Medical Center is less than a 10-mile drive from Chula Vista.
