East Caln is a Chester County township that wraps around the eastern end of Downingtown that was established in 1728 when the original Caln Township was divided into East and West. Early development was shaped by agriculture and water-powered mills along the Brandywine River, and the Lancaster Turnpike, built in the late 18th century, helped connect the area to Philadelphia, 35 miles away, and improved local commerce. East Caln’s boundaries have changed over time, especially after the borough of Downingtown formed in 1859.
