Homeownership trending upward in East Chicago
In the heart of industrial East Chicago, the East Calumet neighborhood abuts a hub of massive oil tanks and a heavy rail yard serving the city’s factories and its shipping harbor on Lake Michigan. With such a heavy industrial sector and the need for workers, the city offers incentives that make it easier to buy a home. “People like living here because of the affordable housing,” says Fernando Alanis, a real estate agent with Listing Leaders Northwest who grew up in East Chicago. “One of the things that’s great in East Chicago is the down payment assistance program, one of the best in Northwest Indiana.” He says it’s a class held once a month, and, at the end, a voucher is given to help with the down payment. “It’s a great program that’s turned renters into homeowners. It’s changed the city around,” he adds.

Some Cape Cod and ranch-style homes have been renovated, making them look more modern than initially built between the 1920s and ‘40s. The First Street website tracks environmental factors and says this neighborhood is in an active noise area because it is just west of the Gary/Chicago International Airport. The website also indicates that because of the low-lying topography, there is a flood risk in this neighborhood, and the area has had occasional moderate air quality days. The CAP crime score is a 4, at the national average. However, some violent crimes score higher. The only house of worship is the Catholic Holy Trinity Croatian Church, which has been in the same location on Carey Street since 1917.

Riley Park is a neighborhood gathering place
One of the biggest parks in East Chicago is also the site for a summer three-day celebration of the neighborhood. Calumet Day is held in July at Riley Park. While some events occur outside the park, there is a picnic and parade on the Saturday of the event. It was started in 1994 by the Concerned Calumet Citizens Committee to bring the neighborhood together. When the festival is not going on, the park has several lighted basketball courts, a walking path and other athletic fields. Other recreation options are by Lake Michigan. During the summer, swimmers can enjoy the waters of Lake Michigan at Jerose Park Beach, take a boat out at the East Chicago Marina or enjoy the indoor fun at the Ameristar Casino East Chicago, which is on a riverboat on the lake. There are close to 2,000 slot machines and 40 table games. The lakefront fun is about 3 and a half miles north of the neighborhood.

Industrial presence in East Chicago
Cleveland Cliffs Indiana Harbor, Nova Steel and Olympic Steel operate several steel mills north of the neighborhood, close to the lake. While measures are in place to stem pollution, older legacy mills no longer in operation left an impact. For example, a lead manufacturing facility in West Calumet is undergoing remediation as an EPA Superfund site. The elevated levels of lead and arsenic forced the closure of a low-income housing complex in 2017. To the east of the East Calumet neighborhood is a Citgo petroleum terminal, with over 200 acres of tanks containing millions of gallons of petroleum products. It was the site of a refinery that closed in 1973.
