East Douglas has a small-town feel in The Blackstone River Valley. There’s not much commercial activity here; however, locals can access numerous outdoor recreation options, like ice fishing at Manchaug Pond or horseback riding along The Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT). “It’s close to Douglas State Forest, which is huge and keeps the area remote,” explains Lindsey Sarah Emmanuel broker/owner of Lindsey Sarah Realty, who has lived in the area for 8 years. With easy access to Massachusetts State Route 146, which leads to Worcester and Providence, this neighborhood is great for commuters who want space to breathe when they get off work.

Walking the SNETT, camping at Sutton Falls
Within the neighborhood is Stevens Pond, which is entirely private, meaning visitors must live on the pond or know someone who lives there to explore it. It flows into Manchaug Pond, which is open to the public and spans nearly 400 acres. In the summer, locals can cast their lines into the water and, in the winter, go ice fishing. There’s also a boat launch here. Along Manchaug Pond sits Sutton Falls Campgrounds. This is a great place for a weekend getaway with family or friends, where visitors can go birding or biking and spend their evenings relaxing by the campfire. SNETT runs 22 miles from the Franklin State Forest to the Douglas State Forest. “It’s an old rail line, and everyone loves it,” Emmanuel explains. “People go on their daily walks there. Many people around here have horses, so you’ll see a lot of that. Some people even bring their horses to Douglas just for that trail.” For kids, there’s Storywalk on the SNETT, an Eagle Scout project where little stories were placed along wooden posts on the trail, combining a love of reading with a love of the outdoors. The Douglas State Forest, where SNETT ends, spans nearly 6,000 acres and offers a scenic, wooded outdoor experience.

What's happening on Main Street
East Douglas has a small downtown area with street parking, old churches and historic architecture. Aside from a few businesses and restaurants, there's not much here – but locals like it that way. The Little Coffee Bean is where they get their morning lattes and muffins. At the Grille on Main, folks order finger food, clink glasses and watch the game. Nearby Sokol Club is every townie’s favorite dive bar, with darts, pool tables and a jukebox. There are also a few unique local stores in the neighborhood. Vaillancourt Folk Art is known for its Christmas decorations. Entering the store, visitors may feel like they have stepped into a holiday village, with lights and trees striking them from every angle. The Douglas Flee Market on North East Main Street sells antiques, furniture and collectibles during varying weekend hours. To grab groceries, residents must travel about 3 miles north to Walmart in Whitinsville or 5 miles east to Hannaford in Uxbridge.

Variety of housing options
East Douglas is rural. There are expanses of green fields and dense woods behind many homes. Small brooks run throughout the neighborhood, and out of the window of a moving car, locals might see a small creek between the trees. Potential homebuyers can find both historic properties and new construction. Prices typically fall in the mid $200,000 to mid $600,000 range. On the lower end, buyers can expect 19th-century homes that might need some updating. A four-bedroom ranch-style or Colonial-Revival property will run between $400,000 and $600,000, while townhouses typically run around $400,000. “The market is moving very quickly,” Emanuel says. “I usually put things under agreement within 12 days.”

Douglas Public School District
Students are zoned for the Douglas Public School District and can attend Douglas Primary School before moving to Douglas Elementary School. These schools receive B-minus grades from Niche. Then, they can attend Douglas Middle School before finishing their public education at Douglas High School. These schools get B-grades from Niche. Douglas High School offers nine Competency Designations for students interested in a particular career path, like culinary arts, health sciences and child development. Plus, Emmanuel says, “The district has brand new elementary, middle and high school buildings.”

Oktoberfestivities and beyond
Oktoberfest draws visitors from Douglas and surrounding towns. The festival includes rides and games for kids, live music, local vendors and more. The Douglas Winter Stroll takes place in early December, and vendors extend from downtown to the common, creating a commercial trail that locals can follow for last-minute holiday shopping. The Simon Fairfield Public Library is a place for the community to get together throughout the year, hosting everything from a Young Readers Club to a Lego Club.

18 miles to Worcester, 28 miles to Providence
Locals have easy access to Massachusetts State Route 146, which leads about 18 miles north to Worcester and about 28 miles south to Providence. “It’s only a 20-minute drive to Worcester and a 30-minute drive to Providence,” Emanuel says. “A lot of my clients commute to either city – or work from home.” Aside from Main Street, where there are a few sidewalks, the neighborhood isn’t very walkable, and locals will need a car to get around. Car dependency increases due to the neighborhood's lack of public transportation. But when it’s time to fly, the North Central State Airport is about 20 miles south.
