Glenwood is a quiet suburb along East Greenwich’s Main Street, where there sits a charming collection of shops and restaurants and the nearby downtown area. “It’s centrally located, and the walkability is great. You could live here without a car and have everything you need,” says Lauren Swanson, a Realtor with RE/MAX Professionals. Although walking through the Glenwood neighborhood does not include access to sidewalks, the streets are shaded by mature oak and pine trees.
Homebuyers can get a 3-bedroom ranch-style home for $350,000 to $475,000 or a 4-bedroom colonial for $450,000 to $615,000. Most homes were built in the 1950s, but newer construction includes Imperial on Greenwich, a modern 38-unit condo complex with 2-bedroom units selling for around $500,000. Homebuyers can also find select four-bedroom homes built in the early 2020s, selling for about $620,000. Many homes in Glenwood have quarter or half-acre lots with fenced-in yards, giving homeowners room for a pool or fire pit.
The neighborhood includes green spaces such as Fairfield Playground, where kids can play on the playground and swing on the swing set. Along the water, Scalloptown Park has a half-mile gravel loop that’s great for walking or biking. The Park’s name references Greenwich Bay’s history as a thriving seaport that was the scallop capital of Rhode Island, where the African American community that lived there up until the 1920s made a living from fishing and selling the mollusks. Today, the area is a popular destination for kayaking and picnicking. Head across the street to Bleachery Woods Waterfall Trail, a secluded nature hike winding along the neighborhood’s Bleachery Pond. The trail is hidden among St. Patrick’s Cemetery, but those who are willing to walk through the graveyard are rewarded with views of a 20-foot waterfall dam at the end of their hike. The East Greenwich Marina and East Greenwich Yacht Club are only 2 miles away, making it easy for boaters to explore the Greenwich Cove.
Children in the neighborhood attend the East Greenwich Public Schools District, which has a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1 and is ranked the 2nd best school district in Rhode Island by Niche. Students in grades K-5 can walk to James H. Eldredge Elementary School. Students then move on to Archie R. Cole Middle School and East Greenwich High School, all of which earn an A from Niche. Private school options include the nearby Rocky Hill Country Day School, which serves grades K-12 and earned an A-plus from Niche. “The schools are fantastic, and they attract a lot of buyers from out of state, “says Swanson. “It’s a nice community of people that want to be social.”
For groceries, drive 3 miles to East Greenwich Square and stop by Dave’s Fresh Marketplace. Glenwood is also within walking distance of East Greenwich’s charming Main Street, where you’ll find seafood restaurants like Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar, coffee shops like MainStreet Coffee and entertainment at the Greenwich Odeum, a performing arts venue that hosts comedy shows, musical performances and more. “Every night, the restaurants are packed. It’s busy, active and social. It’s not just an old historic town,” says Swanson. Closer to home, Ritrovo is a go-to for either Italian comfort food or traditional pub fare. For classic American food paired with an extensive wine list, dine at Meritage.
