In Potowomut, a peninsula town surrounded by the bay, locals stroll the beach watching the sunset or sit on their patios admiring the sailboats. In this East Greenwich neighborhood, the water is never far. “Potowomut is a lovely neighborhood extremely tucked away, but you still have quick access to highways, restaurants and hospitals,” says Carol Cooney, RE/MAX Realtor and local of 22 years.

Many of the residential homes in Potowomut are closer to the shoreline, with some houses sharing a backyard with the water itself. Beach cottages, ranch homes and Cape Cods ranging from 900 to 1,500 square feet sell around $425,000 to $575,000. More contemporary homes and Georgian-style houses, some with driveways and garages, ranging from 1,400 to 2,000 square feet can be found in the $600,000 to $850,000 price range. Larger, 1,800- to 3,000-square-foot custom colonials and Victorian cottages, some on or near the water are in the $900,000 to $1 million price range.

Students living in Potowomut can attend schools in the North Kingstown School District, which receives an overall A-grade on Niche. Younger learners can benefit from a 12:1 student-to-teacher ratio at Forest Park Elementary School. As they progress, learners can move up to Davisville Middle School, which is ranked the #5 Best Public Middle School in Rhode Island according to Niche. North Kingstown Senior High School, ranked by Niche as the #3 Best Public High School in the state, serves the community’s older students. Also in the neighborhood is Rocky Hill Country Day School, a small private school for students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

Potowomut locals can make the hard choice between spending their day at Sandy Point Beach or Goddard Memorial State Park, both offering a beach area with water access. At Sandy Point Beach, families can play together in the sand while the sun is up and relax on a blanket while the sun goes down. At Goddard Memorial State Park, outdoorsy residents can also stroll through the wooded walking trails, enjoy the picnic areas and bring their dog to the beach of Greenwich Cove as the sun begins to set. Next to the state park is the Potowomut Golf Course, a private golf club. “There are a few golf courses and country clubs here, as the area tends to be more private and exclusive,” notes Cooney.

Ives Road runs through the entire peninsula of Potowomut, the northern tip stopping at Sandy Point Beach and the southern end leading to The Trap Bar & Grill. This East Greenwich favorite serves American and Italian comfort food in a laid-back setting, with patio seating and live music. Along nearby US Route 1, there are several restaurants and shops, including seafood, tapas, and Asian cuisine options. Farther south along Route 1, locals pick up groceries and run other errands at the Stop & Shop Plaza. “The nice thing about this area is that you can be hidden from the action, but it’s easy to get to it if you want to,” Cooney says.

When Potowomut locals want to get out of the neighborhood, they can take either Route 1 or Interstate 95 north for less than 20 miles north to land in the heart of downtown Providence. On the other side of Greenwich Cove, several bus stops line Route 1. “The neighborhood is truly a hidden treasure, with beaches in your backyard and interstate access nearby,” Cooney states. It may be easy to explore outside of this suburb, but it’s even easier for Potowomut residents to stay tucked away in their private and quiet coastal town.
