Horseback riding and nature preserves
Faith Hill Farm is also located off Division Street and specializes in offering horseback riding to visitors of any skill level, as well as equine therapy. About 3 miles south of the neighborhood, the Frenchtown Park, Laurel Wood and Fry Family Nature Preserve complex sprawls over more than 100 acres and is replete with trails, a pond and even relics of past buildings along its paths. Residents can also visit the Big River Management area to the west, a preserve that encompasses more than 8,000 acres made up of wetlands, rivers and forests, with trails for hiking and biking. Visitors can also fish and hunt on its grounds, but the preserve prohibits camping.

Few restaurants sit within Shippeetown, but Dantas recommends one in particular. “Circe is a favorite among Rhode Islanders that people drive from all over to come to,” he says. “There’s a dozen restaurants in about 2 miles. Tavern in the Square is a local restaurant chain that people love.” LineSider Brewing hosts trivia nights, fundraisers and more, and farther down South County Trail, GiGi’s Scoops is open seasonally for ice cream. More eateries are located in East Greenwich and farther east toward Greenwich Cove. On Post Road, Siena serves up Tuscan dishes, the Waysider Grille specializes in a pub atmosphere and diners can enjoy dessert at Hill-Top Creamery. Groceries can be found at Dave’s Fresh Marketplace in East Greenwich Square, and a Walmart and Home Depot are located to the northwest across Interstate 95.

Interstate 95 makes up most of Shippeetown’s northern edge, connecting Shippeetown with other major northeastern cities like Philadelphia, New York, Newark and more. “We’ve got two exits right off of 95, and you can come off the exit, go 100 yards and you’re in East Greenwich,” Gammons says. An interchange of I-95 and Route 2 is at Shippeetown’s northeastern corner, with Route 2 running all the way north into the state capital of Providence, while the nearby Route 4 heads southbound into North Kingstown. The Greenwich Medical Center & Office Park sits along South County Trail, and furry and feathered friends are cared for at the 24-hour Ocean State Veterinary Specialists animal hospital close by. “People who live in Shippeetown are very close to everything,” Gammons says. “You kind of get the best of both worlds there.”
