Rural but within commuting distance

Resting along the Connecticut River, East Haddam is home to a rural community surrounded by historic buildings and natural beauty. The oldest Federalist meetinghouse in the U.S. is located on Town Street, and the neighborhood offers hundreds of acres of unspoiled nature preserves and state parks that give residents access to an abundance of trails and outdoor activities. “For homebuyers who want to escape the urban environment, East Haddam is country living at its best,” says Realtor and broker/owner of Garden Realty Greg Hanner. “The neighborhood is only 30 miles from Hartford, an easy commute up Route 2. Buyers looking for value often find more home for the money here.”

Why acreage matters

Homes in East Haddam often feature a full acre or more of land, some with lakefront views and others surrounded by woodland. High-end colonials take center stage, while smaller ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and historic homes are priced for noticeably less. From fixer-uppers to large estates, homebuyers can expect to pay between $100,000 and $2 million for a property in East Haddam. Townhouses and condominiums are fewer and mostly located near the town center of Moodus. They list for between $225,000 and $300,000. “The homes in East Haddam tend to have classic styles with a lot of diversity in size and amenities,” Hanner says. “What’s important here is the amount of land and the low population density. It makes a difference to commuters who want that space to come home to.” The density in East Haddom is 1 person per acre.

Local places to eat and shop

In the warmer months, residents head to East Haddam Town Beach. This small strip of coastline on the Moodus Reservoir is a good place for sand and sunshine or to launch a boat to fish. Devil’s Hopyard State Park is not far away. It gets its name from an 18th-century malt house where it was believed the devil produced his wares. It’s also the site of a magnificent waterfall called Chapman Falls. In Puritan times, it’s been said the devil would sit atop the 60-foot falls and play his fiddle. The 18-hole Fox Hopyard Golf Club next door covers 530 acres of rolling Connecticut hills. Locals can head east to Machimoodus State Park for an invigorating hike to explore its 300 acres of forests, ponds, fields and caves.

Delightfully called a community pollinator, the East Haddam Farmers Market is held every Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. from June to September at Shagbark Lumber and Farm Supplies on Mount Parnassus Road. The area also honors its draft horse rescue program with a May fundraiser at Autumn Ridge Farm. Vendors, raffles, wagon rides and horse showings celebrate the lives of neglected, abused or endangered draft horses.

Transportation around East Haddam
