Lakeside living in East Hampton

The small town of East Hampton is located 22 miles south of Hartford and just a stone's throw from Boston and New York City. The town is known for its rich history, surrounding natural beauty and close-knit community. Lake life is on offer in East Hampton, with Lake Pocotopaug sitting at the town's center. The lake is one of Connecticut's largest inland bodies of water and a significant draw for boaters and anglers. "The lake is a big part of town," says Linda Bitondo, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. "People love to head out onto the water on their boats." In many ways, the lake is at the center of the town's recreational activities year-round. In the winter months, ice skating is popular. Once the ice thaws, locals return to catching fish and practicing their backstroke.

Life along the water

Lake Pocotopaug also serves as a major draw for prospective homebuyers, with many homes sitting in front of the water, offering boat access and lovely lake views. Lakefront colonial cottages, newly constructed Craftsman-style estates, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes comprise the area, with prices ranging from $100,000 to $1.24 million.

Middlesex County schools

The area's strong sense of community is weaved into several aspects of town life, especially the school system. "This is a small town where everyone knows everyone," Bitondo says. "If your kid goes to school here, you'll know everyone in town." Children in the area attend Center Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of B and was ranked the number 13 best public elementary school in Middlesex County. Next, they attend East Hampton Middle School, which has an overall Niche grade of B-minus. Teenagers attend East Hampton High School, which has an overall Niche grade of B and was ranked the seventh-best public high school in Middlesex County. The school also excels in sports, with the girl's basketball team becoming the 2023 CIAC champions.

Down by the river

Outdoorsy activities are popular in East Hampton. Nature enthusiasts flock to Nelson's Family Campground for camping trips and other recreational activities. The campground has an outdoor swimming pool, fishing pond, hiking trails and athletic sports courts. Hikers can also head to Air Line South State Park, once home to rails that offered stylish rapid transit from New York to Boston. Today, visitors enjoy lovely panoramic views on foot, bike or horseback. The Connecticut River and Lake Pocotopaug offer fun nautical activities like fishing, boating and kayaking.

Tunes, Tales & Ales

When in the mood for some music, locals head to Dexter's Tunes Tales & Ales. It's not just a music store—this spot also functions as a bookstore and a bar. Perfect for hanging out with a beer and a good book, the venue hosts open mic nights on Thursday and Sunday so that residents can let their wild side out. When locals crave Tex-Mex cuisine, Loco Perro comes in clutch with daily specials. ESO Coffee House is the place for friends to catch up over espresso beverages and tasty sandwiches. Sitting along Route 66 is the aptly named Tavern on 66, a spacious bar serving craft beer and tavern food. Groceries and everyday essentials are picked up at the area's Stop and Shop.

The Old Home Days Parade

The Old Home Days Parade is a cornerstone of East Hampton's close community. The event has existed in one form or another since 1912, and while the details have been different over the years, it's always focused on bringing the community together. Today, Old Home Days features a parade with local and state figures marching, a carnival with classic rides like a merry-go-round, live music and a 5k on the second day of the parade.
