Convenient commutes and a tight-knit community in East Northport
To a casual observer, East Northport’s name might not make a lot of sense. A quick glance at a map reveals that the hamlet sits more to the south of Northport than to its east, but at the time the community took its name from the train station at its heart, a portion of Northport was already referred to as South Northport. Since that name was taken and the hamlet's new train station was to the east of the old one, it became known as East Northport. Today’s East Northport is a charming residential area that has the advantage of being just a few minutes away from major attractions like Northport and Crab Meadow Beach, though the businesses and restaurants running through its center along Larkfield Road ensure that residents don’t have to leave their community for shopping or entertainment. “East Northport has a great vibe,” says Valerie LaBianca, a licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman who has lived in the East Northport and Elwood communities for 57 years and has sold homes here for 15 years. “It’s commuter-friendly, has cultural activities, diverse demographics, many community-owned local businesses as well as fabulous parks and recreation. It’s a welcoming suburban atmosphere.”
The hamlet's tight-knit and involved community causes generation after generation of residents to choose to stay. “Predominantly people love it and want to stay and want their kids to stay,” says Janet Pushee, an associate broker at Coldwell Banker Real Estate, adding that many residents avoid moving outside of town. Instead, they choose to move to bigger or smaller houses within East Northport as their needs change. “So they do what they have to do to keep everybody as close as possible,” she says.

Fixer-uppers starting at $550,000
Aside from the thrumming artery of Larkfield Road, East Northport’s streets are quiet and often lined with Cape Cods, colonial-style homes and split-levels. LaBianca and Pushee say home prices play a role in some people’s decision to buy a house here. “East Northport is a little more affordable than Northport,” Pushee says. “It’s a bigger community, so there’s more housing there and it’s a little bit more affordable because it’s not as close to the water.” Fixer-uppers can drop as low as $550,000, and most homes max out at around $1 million. The median home price is about $700,000. East Northport also lacks the village taxes of Northport, which can help make it more affordable. Even though East Northport is a bigger community with more homes available for potential homebuyers, there’s fierce competition for homes. “It’s totally insane,” says Pushee, warning that bidding wars are common. The CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Hurricane season can impact the area
Just like the rest of Long Island, hurricane season can impact East Northport. When these storms hit, the community has a moderate risk of flooding and a severe risk of high winds. Getting home insurance to protect against storm damage can help, though.
Highly rated schools shared with Northport Village
One thing East Northport shares with Northport is its highly rated school system. The Northport-East Northport Union Free School District has an A on Niche. Children can attend Fifth Avenue Elementary School from kindergarten through fourth grade before attending East Northport Middle School. Both schools earn A-minuses. Students then move on to Northport High School, which Niche gives an A and lists among the top 15 public high schools in Suffolk County. The high school has highly rated academic and art programs, winning repeated recognition for its music program, including being declared a Signature Music School by the GRAMMY Foundation.

Nearby highways, East Northport’s LIRR station
Larkfield Road and Pulaski Road serve as the main thoroughfares within East Northport. State Route 25A also runs to the community’s north, and it takes just a few minutes to get onto Sunken Meadow State Parkway. From East Northport’s Long Island Rail Road station, commuters reach Manhattan’s Penn Station in an hour and a half. Northport VA Medical Center is located in the community, while Huntington Hospital is less than 6 miles away and St. Catherine of Siena Hospital is 7 miles away.
Veterans Park, an active Little League and community at the library
Veterans Park is East Northport’s biggest park. It has a playground, skate park, hiking trails and lighted sports fields and courts, making it a popular spot for residents to play basketball, volleyball, baseball, soccer and more. According to Pushee, the park’s new pickleball courts are particularly popular, with people always waiting for a chance to play on them. Many of East Northport’s other parks also have baseball fields, giving the very active Little League team places to practice and hold games. “Kids from all over the whole area participate in the Little League and they have the fields to accommodate all that too, which is wonderful,” Pushee says, noting that the local Little League serves children from both Northport and East Northport. “I’ve gone to games in East Northport my whole life.” Meadowlark Park’s trails are popular for hiking and mountain biking, while golfers tee up at Northport Golf Course.
According to Pushee, East Northport Public Library is another focal point for the community, bringing them together for regular activities and offering education programs on topics like taxes, resume writing and computers. “Our library system is second to none,” Pushee says. “And the library programs are so diversified, they start with 2-year-olds and go all the way up to seniors.” Pushee adds that a booklet comes out every month, letting residents know what activities are planned so they can sign up. “They offer so many different programs during the year that enhance all of our lives,” she says. “They have a program for the 2-year-olds where you go in your pajamas at night and they read stories, and then the kids go home and go to bed. It’s adorable.”

Local dining, shopping and essentials on Larkfield Road
Most of East Northport’s shops and restaurants are stretched along Larkfield Road. Across from the East Northport Station, The Crossroads Café has been a mainstay here for decades and is particularly well-known for its seafood. “Their food is phenomenal,” Pushee says, noting that it’s one of the best restaurants in East Northport. It’s a sentiment that LaBianca echoes. “Crossroads is the staple in town forever and will not ever disappoint, and it has a great bar,” she says. Lark Pub & Grub is another popular spot thanks to its wide selection of craft beers, burgers and weekly trivia night. Larkfield Road is also lined with shops and essentials, from a bicycle shop and a gaming store to banks and a post office. Larkfield IGA Market and Pat’s Marketplace provide groceries close to home. Northport’s shops and restaurants are less than 3 miles away, and Commack has major retailers like Petco, Home Depot and Trader Joe’s less than 4 miles away.

East Northport Festival and Fireman’s Fair
Every September, the Chamber of Commerce hosts the East Northport Festival, sometimes just called The Festival. “It’s a big deal and tons of fun,” LaBianca says. “They close the street; its riddled with rides, great vendor food, entertainment and fun.” She says the Fireman’s Fair is another major yearly event, kicking off with a parade and featuring carnival rides and live music all weekend.
