Winding cul de sacs eight miles from the city
Sunnyland is a small, neatly organized suburb eight miles outside of Peoria. With farmlands to the north and Farmdale Reservoir to the south, Sunnyland is a neighborhood boasting backyard access to the outdoors and a comfortable suburban lifestyle. Several parks populate the area, as do small businesses. Washington Plaza shopping mall and the AMC theater anchor the community at its center. Loosely knit cul de sacs wind around Route 8, which slices through the farmland and provides a convenient 15-minute drive into the city.
Modest bungalow and ranch-styles in Sunnyland
The semi-rural landscape of Sunnyland is host to a predictable set of home types and prices. “People like the small-town feel, and in Sunnyland, you’re just minutes from Peoria,” says Realtor Marc Wells of Re/Max. One-story ranch styles are by far the most common, with modest yards and neutral facades of brick and vinyl. Bungalows also appear, with two or three and 1,000 square feet being the typical layout. “Price is definitely a factor,” says Wells, with single-family homes in this neighborhood ranging between $110,000 and $177,000. The higher-priced ranch styles feature attached garages and paved driveways.

Off to the park with the pups
Various recreational activities are a staple of life in Sunnyland. Meadow Valley Park is a spot full of hiking trails on its perimeter and a dog play area at the center. Pups are welcome under the pavilion to get some shade, and owners can clean them up after a messy day of play at the pet washing station. The fenced-in area allows pups to make friends and run free without worry. Children aren’t left out, either, with the park’s dedicated playground complete with a jungle gym and slides. Folks who want to connect even more with nature should check out the Farmdale Reservoir on the neighborhood’s south end. Bicyclists use the winding trails to get some exercise in the woods. Oak and hickory trees are spaced out and have narrow trunks, so a walk through the forested area is inviting and lush, especially in the fall.
A quick bite in town
There are some favorite local restaurants in this neighborhood. Bernardi’s is a fine dining spot where folks can sit down and enjoy a rack of ribs or sirloin fillet. Their modern, minimalistic atmosphere is excellent for relaxing with an entrée and chatting with a friend or date on a Friday evening. A couple of bars are also close by for a drink. The Ice Cream Shack of Sunnyland serves quick treats, which are great after a Saturday spent outdoors. “Sunnyland is a nice, smaller community that has lots to offer regarding shopping,” says Wells. Groceries are a short drive east along Route 8, where locals can choose between Aldi, Walmart and Kroger for their weekly needs.

Seasonal events in East Peoria
East Peoria has plenty of events for locals to get engaged and active. During the holiday season, folks can participate in the Christmas Splendor Contest from the comfort of their own homes. From inflatables to lights, residents decorate their neighborhoods to get into the holiday spirit. The East Peoria Fondulac District Library hosts Storytime with Santa for kids who want to get a photo with Kris Kringle and have stories read to them. Finally, there’s a Get Lit New Year’s Celebration, where locals attend smaller events like riding a lighted trolley through the winter wonderland. For those who’d rather get moving themselves, Get Lit encourages a one-mile walk/run just for fun.
Hopping on the CityLink
Residents of Sunnyland benefit from the CityLink bus line, running straight along Route 8. The bus line extends from the Washington Plaza Shopping Mall into Peoria. This route runs once every hour, so while the bus is convenient for reaching the city on a weekend, driving one’s own vehicle is still the best bet.
