The small clusters of homes amid the vast, open green spaces of East Taylor Township, 5 miles from Johnstown in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, make it seem like an isolated entity. However, those living in the township are not strangers to one another. They celebrate holidays together, support local businesses and protect their environment. Missing dogs, road work and events are consistently posted about on the East Taylor Township Facebook page. The people of East Taylor make sure everyone is noticed and cared for, especially any runaway four-legged friends.

Arts and crafts festival in Westmont
The township and the volunteer fire department organize holiday events throughout the year. In December, little ones can have breakfast with Santa, and for Halloween, the township offers trick-or-treating early to ensure younger children get to celebrate the holiday before it gets too dark outside. Johnstown and the Community Arts Center of Cambria County host performing art events for the surrounding townships. “Johnstown is surrounded by 18 municipalities,” says Lisa Rager, the executive director of Visit Johnstown. “They’re all part of the greater Johnstown area.” Most of Johnstown gathers for local events, and a staple festival in the community is the Log House Arts Festival, which takes place from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 at the Community Arts Center. “The Community Arts Center hosts the arts festival,” says Rager. “It’s a large arts and crafts festival in Westmont.” The festival hosts local artists and crafters who handmake and sell everything from rugs to earrings. Those wishing to attend religious services may visit Conemaugh Valley Grace Brethren Church, Summit Chapel United Methodist and Stevens Memorial Holy Church.

Ranch, Foursquare, Cape Cod and minimal traditional styles are common in the area. Smaller homes with two to three bedrooms range from $50,000 to 100,000. Larger houses with three to five bedrooms or that have been recently renovated range from $125,000 to $250,000.
East Taylor home styles range from bungalows to American Foursquare's.

Farmer’s market in Central Park
Locals interested in seeing the remains of Johnstown’s past may visit the site of the former Rosedale Coke Plant. Though it is now nothing but concrete buried in the underbrush, the ghost of the old facility is still present in many memories. Coke plants carbonize coal to heat other steel plants and generate power. The plant was part of Johnstown’s steel industry, which was, at one time, the city’s main export. Central Park, a gathering place in downtown Johnstown, is a small green area with paved walking paths, a fountain and statues honoring the founder of Johnstown, Joseph Schantz. The space has a gazebo for outdoor concert performances and hosts the Downtown Johnstown Farmer’s Market on Fridays from May to October.
