On the southern shore of Lake Weir is the community of Weirsdale. The community was part of the region's massive citriculture enterprise, with several packing houses shipping out locally grown produce sourced by thousands of acres of citrus groves. Nowadays, most locals commute to nearby cities like Ocala from a range of lakefront properties, traditional suburbs and rural homesteads.
Locals spend their time exploring the local countryside or relaxing along Lake Weir. Eaton's Beach offers some sandy shorelines where locals swim, jet ski and sunbathe. There are also more traditional suburban parks like Weirsdale Park, home to playgrounds, picnic areas, basketball courts and a walking trail leading under dense forest canopies. Golf enthusiasts practice their backswing at Water Oak Golf Club. Casual and experienced golfers play on rolling fairways fringed by oak trees with hanging Spanish moss.
South of the lakeshore, locals live on country roads fringed by dense forest and sprawling farmland. Everything from early 20th-century foursquare homes to more contemporary millennial mansions makes up the diverse range of homes in Weirsdale's residential landscape. Large home lots, ranging from a half-acre to 10 or more acres on the property, are a main draw for Weirsdale's homes. Waterfront homes feature expansive home lots as well as private docks and beaches along the lakeshore. Manufactured and 55+ communities also offer more friendly prices and community amenities such as clubhouses and athletic facilities. Homes along the waterfront tend to be more expensive, ranging from $600,000 to as high as $2.0 million dollars. More traditional suburban, manufactured and rural houses range from $100,000 to as much as $735,000.
Major roadways like Ocala Road lead locals to shopping centers. At the same time, Weirsdale has a handful of friendly local retailers and restaurants to browse through. Fresh produce and meats are sold at the Weirsdale Grocery, along with a range of convenience items and household necessities. Just south along Ocala Road is Reeds Grove, a family-owned farmstand offering a range of fruits, veggies and locally sourced honey. Locals enjoy waterfront dining on the deck at Eaton's Beach Sandbar & Grill, which serves Louisiana-style dishes and hosts trivia nights and live music performances.
Weirsdale is home to a unique music venue called Orange Blossom Opry, which operates out of the old Weirsdale High School gymnasium and showcases local musical talent as well as big-name country and bluegrass musicians.
Public school students are served by Marion County Public Schools, beginning their academic careers at primary schools such as Stanton-Weirsdale Elementary. The school has an overall C-plus Niche rating and teaches from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as Lake Weir Middle and High School. Both schools have at least an overall C-plus rating according to Niche. Lake Weir High has excellent academic programs, including the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education Diploma, offering curated learning programs based on student's interests, abilities, and future career plans.
Locals depend on their cars and trucks to get around the neighborhood. Major roadways like Ocala Road connect locals to nearby shopping centers in Lady Lake, six miles to the south, and to Downtown Ocala, 25 miles to the north.
