A well-rounded big town offers competitively priced homes
Tucked between the Chippewa River to the west, Chippewa Valley Regional Airport to the north, two highways to the east and downtown to the south, the Airport neighborhood offers an advantage that other neighborhoods in Eau Claire might be hard-pressed to duplicate. "Airport is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Eau Claire,'' says Peter Hebert, a Realtor with NextHome WISCO Success for the past four years. "Residents don’t have to worry about significant changes coming to their neighborhood. The rest of Eau Claire is booming, and that can bring change to roads, boundaries and neighboring communities, but Airport is well-established.”
Since 1980, the population of Eau Claire has increased from about 48,000 to just over 70,000. “For many reasons, including a remarkably low cost of living and incredible outdoor attractions, software, medical and manufacturing companies have come here and thrived,'' Hebert says. "And with that, our cultural scene has just exploded beautifully. People say that Eau Claire is a little city, but I consider it a very well-rounded big town.”

Midcentury homes minutes from Chippewa Valley Regional Airport
Two-bedroom cottages in Airport have recently sold from about $135,000 to about $200,000. Mid-century ranch-style homes range from about $200,000 to $300,000, while bi-level homes have recently sold from about $300,000 to $350,000. “Transplants from larger cities realize they can live here, hop on a commuter flight one or two days a week and be in Chicago or the Twin Cities in little over an hour,'' Hebert says. "The cost of living is so much less than where they came from, and the way of life here offers so much more.”

Eau Claire Area School District is the No. 1 district in Eau Claire County
Niche gives Eau Claire Area School District a B-plus grade and ranks it the No. 1 district in Eau Claire County. In addition to about 20 public elementary, middle and high schools, the district also offers an early learning program and three charter schools. Students in Airport can attend Davey Elementary, graded B-plus by Niche. The school offers kindergarten through fifth grade and licensed before- and after-school care. B-rated Northstar Middle, 1 mile east of Airport, offers programs for gifted students. It also features several after-school clubs, including Battle of the Books and Board Game Club. North High sits south of Piedmont Street at the southern edge of the neighborhood. Graded B-plus, it is ranked the third-best of seven public high schools in the county. Chippewa Valley Technical College, about 5 miles west, offers over 100 academic programs.
Living within a mile of Chippewa Valley Regional Airport
The solidly residential Airport neighborhood has notably flat terrain. While residents bike for recreation inside the neighborhood and along Riverview Drive to the west, a car is essential day-to-day. The neighborhood is about 95 miles east of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and 180 miles north of Madison, the state capital. Interstate 94 connects west to Minneapolis and southeast to Milwaukee.
Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, after which the neighborhood is named, is Eau Claire’s closest airport. Locals can expect to hear airplanes departing and arriving overhead. Homes in the middle of the neighborhood are about 1.5 miles from the main terminal and Hangar 54 Grill, a casual restaurant with a runway view. Sun Country Airlines, the primary airline here since 2017, is considered an ultra-low-cost carrier. It offers direct flights to Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Orlando. In December 2024, United Express will begin daily flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport with connections worldwide.
Airport’s overall CAP Index crime score is 2 out of10, while the U.S. average is 4.
The Chippewa and Eau Claire rivers beckon residents to waterside parks
Riverview Park offers panoramic views of the Chippewa River and dense forest land on the west side of the neighborhood. Visitors enjoy swings, a playground, a volleyball court, river access and a boat dock. Mount Simon Park, just outside the southwest boundary of Airport, offers a nine-hole disc golf course. The Chippewa River State Trail starts in downtown Eau Claire, winds north through Airport and ends 30 miles northwest at Durand.
“With abundant natural resources to manage and more than 10 city and county parks in and around Eau Claire, local government organizations here work well together,'' says Kim Watnemoe, office coordinator with Eau Claire County Parks & Forest. "The city, county and state each have their own parks and rec departments. It may seem confusing at first, but they really are a strong alliance.”

Shopping and dining are within four miles of home
“Believe it or not,” Hebert says, “a popular eatery around here is Hangar 54 Grill at the airport. Most people who dine here aren’t jumping on a plane; they live in the neighborhood.”
As the only mall in Eau Claire, Oakwood is the primary shopping destination for Airport residents. With more than 50 retailers and restaurants, its anchors include HOM Furniture, JCPenney and Hobby Lobby. The mall also offers Micon Cinemas, which has 12 movie screens. Festival Foods on North Clairemont Avenue is the closest grocery store, just 4 miles southwest of Airport.
The village of Lake Hallie, 3 miles north of Airport, draws shoppers to Walmart and nearby Heartbreakers, which was voted the third-best bar for karaoke in the Best of the Chippewa Valley 2023 reader poll. For more upscale and diverse dining options, residents of Airport head to downtown Eau Claire.

The largest sculpture tour in the country is in Eau Claire
“Eau Claire is an easy place to love,'' Hebert says. "The city sells itself. From its parks and rivers and its amazing food scene and farmers' markets to the emerging arts scene, Wisconsinites always have fun things to do here.” The year-round Eau Claire Sculpture Tour, which showcases public art throughout the city, is the largest sculpture tour in the country. Local businesses fund the artists and the tour itself to promote tourism, spur economic development and increase downtown revitalization.
