Century-old homes and a historic ski jump draw buyers to Mount Washington
Mount Washington boasts some unbeatable assets, from riverfront parks to historical homes and a location close to the Blue Ox Music Festival. However, the most unusual attraction, which draws national attention and local homebuyers, is the Flying Eagles Ski Club, which features alpine skiing and full-scale ski jumps. The club and the neighborhood share a 130-year history steeped in alpine skiing in the winter and river-based water sports in the summer.
“Outdoor athletes are a common sight in Mount Washington,” says Realtor Peter Hebert, with NextHome WISCO Success for the past four years. “They have it made living here. They’ve got Flying Eagles, riverfront parks and miles of hiking and biking trails.” Hebert mentions that the Mount Washington neighborhood is ideal training ground for cyclists. “It’s super hilly, and cyclists love it. And, the views of the Chippewa River from Mount Washington are the best in the city.”

1880s cottages and 21st-century ranch-style homes offer river views
Mount Washington has about 475 single-family homes built between 1880 and 2015. Homestyles include farmhouses, two-story Colonial-style homes, cottages and ranch-style homes. The neighborhood offers about 50% homes and 30% apartments. The remaining properties are a mix of small industrial, retail, healthcare and houses of worship. About 30% of the older homes have been converted to duplex housing and are rental properties. The north half of the neighborhood features the oldest homes with sidewalks and mature hardwood trees. HOA-free subdivisions toward the south of Mount Washington feature the newest homes built after 1990. Homes here offer larger yards, some up to half an acre.
Two-story traditional-style homes from the 1880s have recently sold for about $160,000 to $330,000. Early 20th-century cottages have recently sold for about $180,000 to $200,000. Modified ranch-style homes with up to half an acre yards have recently sold for about $300,000 to $550,000.

Eau Claire Area School District is the No. 1 district in the county
Eau Claire Area School District is the No. 1 district in Eau Claire County and receives a B-plus grade from Niche. In addition to about 20 public elementary, middle and high schools, the district also offers an early learning program and three charter schools, which operate independently while receiving public funding. Students in Mount Washington can attend Lakeshore Elementary, which faces the Chippewa River. With a B-grade from Niche, it is ranked the No. 9 elementary school in Eau Claire County. DeLong Middle receives a B-grade from Niche and is ranked the county's No. 3 public middle school. Activities and clubs include forensics, Math Counts, band, choir and student council. Memorial High is graded A by Niche and is rated the No. 1 public high school in Eau Claire County. Athletics programs are plentiful at Memorial High and offer more than 20 teams across three seasons, including football, track and field, baseball and volleyball.
Chippewa Valley Regional Airport is six miles north of Mount Washington
Residents of Mount Washington can take Highway 12 and Starr Avenue for about 12 miles to reach Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, the closest airport. Sun Country Airlines is the primary airline and is considered an ultra-low-cost carrier. It offers direct flights to Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Orlando. Mount Washington is about 95 miles east of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The state capital, Madison, is 180 miles southeast of Eau Claire. Interstate 94 connects west to Minneapolis and southeast to Milwaukee.
Due to Mount Washington's hilly terrain, car travel is essential for daily driving. Eau Claire offers public transportation, including Eau Claire Transit, with bus stops along Ferry Street, Menomonie Street and Cleveland Street.

Riverside parks and ski-jumps
The city of Eau Claire offers three dog parks, some with river access and all are leash-free. Owners must purchase an annual dog park license or pay a daily use fee at the parks. Southwest Dog Park is located at Ferry Street, facing the Chippewa River. At the south edge of Mount Washington, across Interstate 94, hikers will find the historic Lowes Creek Bridge and the Chippewa River State Trail, which winds north through Eau Claire and then proceeds about 25 miles southwest to Durand. Newell Park is a 3-acre neighborhood park with basketball hoops, sports fields, a playground and picnic areas.
Flying Eagles Ski Club is about one mile north of the Chippewa River and Ferry Street. It offers a youth ski-jumping program dedicated to continuing the 130-year ski-jumping tradition in Eau Claire. The club operates as a non-profit with the goal of promoting all forms of skiing -- downhill, cross country and jumping. Beginners start on the 7-meter hill, working up to the 55-meter hill. The club also maintains a 90-meter jump hill for experienced competitors.

Pizza, pancakes and fresh produce
The Eau Claire Ale House is a tavern where Green Bay Packers football games mean food and drink specials. It features 22 beers on tap and a self-serve tap beer wall. The menu features pizza, calzones and fried fish sandwiches -- a Wisconsin staple. Fella’s Loaded Goat Restaurant and Bar opened in 2023 and has racked up plenty of five-star reviews on Yelp for its breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, which includes salads, subs and pancakes.
The Downtown Farmers’ Market is open outdoors from May through October. A smaller winter market is open from November to April on the second Saturday of the month. Festival Foods is the closest grocery store to Mount Washington. Oakwood Mall is the only mall and primary one-stop shopping destination in Eau Claire, with more than 50 retailers and fast-food restaurants.

The largest sculpture tour and Blue Ox Music Festival
Realtor Hebert says, “Eau Claire is an easy place to love. The city sells itself. From its parks and rivers and its amazing food scene and farmers' markets to the emerging arts scene, Wisconsinites always have fun things to do here.” The Eau Claire Sculpture Tour is not only free public art throughout the city, but it’s also the largest sculpture tour in the country. The tour exhibits original outdoor sculptures year-round. Local businesses fund the artists and the tour itself to promote tourism, spur economic development and increase downtown revitalization.
Music fans fill up campsites and Air BnBs every June for the Blue Ox Music Festival. Held at The Pines Music Park, the three-day festival features Americana and bluegrass artists, including the Sam Bush Band, Watchhouse and Leftover Salmon.
