Classic midcentury homes sell quickly and rarely come to market
With rapid growth in and around Eau Claire for the past decade, home buyers will discover new construction and development in all directions. However, only in established neighborhoods such as Pinehurst, about 7 miles north of downtown, will they find mid-20th century homes, traditional construction and quiet, semi-rural neighborhoods. "That’s probably its number one asset,'' says Kim Bump, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Diversified. "It’s not splashy, but it offers exactly what many buyers want. It’s attractive, nice, and comfortable with very well-built homes.
“I hate to tell buyers when there are no homes for sale in Pinehurst, but it happens often.”

Pinehurst homes offer classic construction and roomy yards
With about 500 residences and 30 blocks inside Pinehurst, many homes feature larger yards than those found closer to the city center. “Buyers can find yards up to half an acre,” Bump says. “Vegetable and herb gardens are easy to spot in Pinehurst.” Small ranch-style homes with separate garages have recently sold from about $150,000 to $200,000. Mid-size ranch-style homes have sold from about $230,000 to $300,000. Split-level homes have recently sold from about $300,000 to $360,000. With relatively few homes in Pinehurst, the list of properties for sale at any given time can be shorter than surrounding areas.

Eau Claire Area School District is the No. 1 school district in the county
Eau Claire Area School District is the No. 1 public school district in Eau Claire County and receives a B-plus grade from Niche. In addition to about 20 public elementary, middle and high schools, the district also offers early-learning programs and three charter schools, which are publicly funded but independently run. One of the charter schools is a K-12 virtual school.
Students in Pinehurst can attend kindergarten through fifth grade at Locust Lane Elementary, in the neighborhood's center. With a B-minus grade, it offers before- and after-school care for all students from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Northstar Middle, 1 mile south of Locust Lane, is graded B-minus and offers programs for gifted students. It also features several after-school clubs, including Battle of the Books and Board Game Club. North High, on Piedmont Street, is less than 2 miles west of Northstar Middle. Graded A-minus, it’s also ranked one of the best public high schools in Wisconsin.
Less than 3 miles from Chippewa Valley Regional Airport
Pinehurst’s location, while unassuming at first, also sets it apart, Bump says. “Buyers who travel for a living love being close to the airport. It saves time when you’re just 3 miles to the gate.” Homes are no farther than 2.5 miles from Chippewa Valley Regional Airport. The fastest route to the airport is via Eddy Lane and Starr Avenue. While Sun Country Airlines has been the primary carrier since 2017, SkyWest Airlines is returning to Eau Claire, with United Express service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport beginning in December 2024. Sun Country Airlines will continue limited service to Fort Myers until April 7, 2025. The airport's main runway for jets runs parallel to the neighborhood, so direct overflights of commercial planes is rare, but their noise can carry.
Eau Claire Transit is the city’s primary bus service, with stops inside Pinehurst along Hastings Way, Locust Lane and Potter Road. Pinehurst is primarily residential with flat terrain, making cycling for recreation or getting to nearby schools easy. The Chippewa River State Trail passes the neighborhood along its 26-mile route from Chippewa Falls, through the city, to the town of Durant -- with crosswalks and overpasses at key intersections.
Outside the neighborhood, cars are essential for daily travel. The neighborhood is about 180 miles northwest of Madison, the state capital.
A recently modernized city park is now a Chippewa Valley hot spot
Historic Pinehurst Park featured a popular ski jump in the 1930s and was a local skiing destination until it closed in the 1970s. Over the past 10 years, the city of Eau Claire Parks & Recreation has partnered with OutdoorMore, Inc. to bring more than skiing and snowboarding back to the park. The two organizations have nearly finished constructing a sledding hill, snowboarding hills, lighted cross-country ski trails, and a hockey and ice-skating rink. They’ve also built enhancements to summertime sports with mountain biking and hiking trails, dirt bike jumps, a curvy and jump-filled facility for bikes and skates called a pump track, and a disc golf course. "While there’s no ski jump at the moment, years of research and community input tells us that the improvements we’ve made are exactly what people want here in Eau Claire,'' says John Lofgren, a maintenance supervisor with Eau Claire’s Parks and Recreation Department. "And with all the attention Pinehurst Park is getting now, it’s likely that we’ll see more features and enhancements down the road.”
Locust Lane Playground, on the grounds of Locust Lane Elementary, draws kids and families after school and on weekends. It's a place to play basketball, field sports or just enjoy the playground. Residents also hike or walk dogs through the woods nearby.

Shopping and dining are within four miles of home
While dining destinations in Pinehurst are limited, they are popular, according to local real estate professionals. Hangar 54 Grill at the airport welcomes more neighbors out to eat than travelers about to hop on a plane. “Another local favorite is Mom’s Kitchen,'' Bump says. "It offers homemade cooking at its best, and you’re likely to run into people you know.” Locals will head to Lake Hallie, about 3 miles north, for fast food and to shop at Aldi.
Oakwood Mall is the only mall in Eau Claire. It offers more than 50 retailers and restaurants. Its anchors include HOM Furniture, JCPenney and Hobby Lobby. The mall also offers Micon Cinemas, which has 12 movie screens.
