Riverside parks and historic mansions close to downtown Eau Claire
Randall Park is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Eau Claire, known for riverside parks and historic mansions close to downtown. Named in honor of an Eau Claire settler from New York named Adin Randall, the area drew him here for his logging, construction and land-development skills. While he lived here for only a few years, his contributions of land to Eau Claire were so appreciated that a world-famous sculptor, Helen Farnsworth Mears, crafted a life-sized sculpture of Randall that is found inside Randall Park today. His home still stands, facing the river on Menomonie Street.
The neighborhood is home to several large and well-appointed parks including Carson Park and Owen Park. Its century-old homes and historic mansions are known for their style, beauty and bright colors. "There’s so much to love about Eau Claire, but residents who live in Randall Park, close to the two rivers, can simply walk a few blocks any day of the week to enjoy fishing, biking, or kayaking,'' says Peter Hebert, an Eau Claire Realtor with NextHome WISCO Success for the past four years. "In the summer, one of the most fun things to do with a group of friends is to grab tubes or rafts and float down the river. Five- and 10-mile trips are popular. Local paddlesport stores can share maps and tips to make trips easy.”
There are many places for bikers to cross the Chippewa River to and from Randall Park.

The Chippewa River beckons residents to waterside parks near downtown Eau Claire
Owen Park offers 11 acres along the east edge of Randall Park, totaling about three-quarters of a mile of Chippewa River frontage from Lake Street to Water Street. The park features a concrete bandshell that hosts Tuesday Night Blues from Memorial Day through Labor Day. An expansive children’s playground, two lighted tennis courts and the Chippewa River Recreation Trail round out the park’s amenities. Randall Park is in the middle of the neighborhood and occupies about one city block. It is a grassy space with gardens, benches and paved walking paths. A playground and neatly manicured areas draw picnickers.
Residents can head west from Randall Park across the Carson Park Drive bridge to reach historic Carson Park. Located on a 134-acre peninsula in the middle of Half Moon Lake, the peninsula park was part of the former course of the Chippewa River., now cut off from the river flow. The park contains baseball, football, and softball venues, as well as the Chippewa Valley Museum. It also is a great place to fish, canoe or kayak.
“The parks in and around downtown are some of the city’s best attractions,'' says Kim Watnemoe, an office coordinator with Eau Claire County Parks & Forest. "They’re close to the water, they host events much of the year, and they educate visitors about the history of Eau Claire.”
