Economy has offered more space in Beaver County for centuries
As the Harmony Society built Economy Village in the 1800s, the religious community quickly outgrew its plot on the Ohio River. For more space, homesteaders and industrialists turned to the rolling, forested hills of what would become the Beaver County borough of Economy. Today, Old Economy Village is a preserved historic attraction in neighboring Ambridge. Despite ongoing suburbanization, Economy has also maintained its reputation for tranquility and a slower-paced lifestyle outside Pittsburgh’s city limits. “Economy isn’t really rural, but there’s more land out here. You’re not smack up next to people. A lot of homes have trees behind them, and I’ve got a little creek running through the back of my property,” says Valerie Keeley, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty who lives in the borough. “It’s quiet, peaceful and right next to Cranberry if you need to go shopping.”

A blend of single-family homes and 55-plus communities
Buyers can find a blend of prewar National-style homes and bungalows and midcentury Minimal Traditional, ranch-style and split-level homes along tree-shaded country roads and in suburban subdivisions. Prices for these older homes usually range from around $110,000 to $440,000, but fixer-uppers can go for less. Colonial Revival and Craftsman-inspired homes were built in cul-de-sac neighborhoods and age-restricted developments like Liberty Hills from the 1980s through the 2010s. Prices for newer construction range from around $330,000 to $830,000. New Traditional homes in The Landings by Foxlane Homes, one of the borough’s newest 55-plus communities, can go for $540,000 to nearly $1.2 million. The Landings and similar communities charge additional homeowners’ association fees to maintain resort-style amenities like pickleball courts and pools.

Commuting around Beaver and Allegheny counties
Beaver, the seat of its namesake county, is about 10 miles from Economy down state Route 65. The Heritage Valley Sewickley and Heritage Valley Beaver hospitals are each about 11 miles away. Pittsburgh commuters will head to Interstates 79 and 279 on the nearly 25-mile drive downtown. Pittsburgh International Airport is about 20 miles from home. Beaver County Transit Authority buses stop at Northern Lights Shopping Center between Pittsburgh and Chippewa, but service is limited. Residents will need a car to get around.
Shopping and dining in Economy and Cranberry Township
Though commercial life is sparse in Economy, a handful of restaurants and specialty businesses are scattered around the borough. Big Sewickley Creek Brewery pairs its local craft beers with an active outdoor seating and events area. “It’s right down on the creek. They don’t have a restaurant, but different food trucks come in. There are picnic tables out back with lights and a fire pit, and they’re so dog-friendly it’s unbelievable. My dog is a ‘brew dog.’ If you bring your dog a few times, they’ll take their picture and hang it on the wall,” Keeley says. Though the Northern Lights Shopping Center is largely vacant, residents can still head to the nearby Walmart for groceries. Around 6 miles from Economy, Cranberry Township has many major big-box stores and countless chain and locally owned restaurants.

Big Sewickley Creek’s flood risk
Big Sewickley Creek and other narrow waterways create flood zones throughout the borough. While most of Economy is unaffected, buyers should consult maps to understand their potential risk and need for insurance.
