Small town community along Highway 107

Edcouch is one of several small towns along State Highway 107 in Southern Texas’ Hidalgo County. The surrounding area is home to some of the nation’s most historically underserved communities, often referred to as “colonias.” Since Edcouch’s inception, residents have come together because of a shared love for their community and to bridge the gaps where modern resources should be. Neighbors began to dig ditches for their own pipes and holes for their septic tanks, often together. The tenacious spirit of this community extends itself to its school system with impressive athletics programs that celebrate each game with a rallying cry, also known as a Corrido – a border song that is deeply ingrained in the culture of colonias. The area along the highway continues to grow as nearby cities bring additional resources to Edcouch, such as $100,000,000 fund for a new water infrastructure program.

Home prices in Edcouch are slightly lower than the Hidalgo County average, drawing buyers who want more bang for their buck. "You can get a lot more land for less money — at the end of the day, people want a bigger place with outdoor space to put in a pool or a playground for the kids," says Patricia Fogg, a Realtor at Effective Real Estate and a five-year local seller. The grassy yards extend to the curb, some accompanied by wire or wood fences. Most Edcouch properties hover between $120,000 and $160,000, fluctuating with square footage and level of renovations and maintenance needed. There is plenty of land to build custom homes for any price range. Lots under a few acres range from $30,000 to $50,000, while properties with acreage in the double digits can exceed $300,000. Most listings sell within 60 days in Edcouch.

From Route 2 to nearby interstates

Edcouch is centered between interstates 69C and 69E, running north-to-south, and sits on top of Route 2, which extends across the lower Rio Grande. Most Edcouch locals are drivers, as the remote area doesn't have public transit options. The Valley International Airport is in the nearby Harlingen for long-distance travel. There are no hospitals or clinics in Edcouch, so residents must drive 25 miles to Edinburg Regional Medical Center and Cornerstone Regional Hospital.

Chain and local staples along Highway 107

Most Edcouch homeowners shop for groceries in Elsa, which has an H-E-B and Walmart off East Edinburg Avenue. Quick eats are also available at Stars Drive-In and Lee Roy’s Chicken and Burgers. La Pasadita Supermarket is on the opposite side of town, with a convenience store setup that's helpful for last-minute stops. In addition to the fast-food restaurants lining the highway, Edcouch has a few well-liked local eateries for a meal away from home, many representing the strong local Latino heritage. Gigi's Restaurant and Café is a town favorite, known for its Southern staples, and Ice Queen Delight is around the corner, with build-your-own raspado, or shaved ice, topped with candy or fruit. Locals can also travel east to Harlingen or west to Edinburgh – each within a half-hour drive – for more shopping and dining.

Bell Park, Edcouch Municipal Park and the local library

Bell Park is the most popular in town, where kids can let loose on the playground at the end of the day. Edcouch Municipal Park is a few blocks east and hosts softball games. The City of Edcouch Library fills up after school and on inclement weather days. It's also where visitors will see the city's funky welcome signage. Edinburg Municipal Park is another public park with multiple ball fields, trails and fishing ponds, along with the World Birding Center.

Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District

Kids living in Edcouch can attend the Elsa-Edcouch Independent School District. The public school progression varies depending on the residence, and schools are clustered together between Edcouch and Elsa, a neighboring town 2 miles west. Many begin learning at Ruben C. Rodriguez Elementary or Santiago Garcia Elementary School before continuing to Carlos Truan Junior High or Edcouch Junior High School. All schools share a C-minus score on Niche. Most older students in Edcouch attend Edcouch-Elsa High, which earns a C-plus Niche score. The high school is known for its impressive athletics. Edcouch-Elsa ISD has its own “Football Corrido” called La Maquina Amarilla, or the Yellow Machine, which plays every Friday night on the local radio station during the season. The award-winning Edcouch-Elsa Fine Arts Center was constructed in 2007 on North Mile 4 West. The center hosts community-driven musicals and plays, along with high school mariachi bands.

Community gatherings in Edcouch

Other than community get-togethers hosted at the Juan Rodriguez Community Center, like Market Days every Saturday and bingo games on Fridays, Edcouch residents most often travel to Edinburg for events. The city offers dozens of annual and seasonal activities. Popular events include the Spring Community Garage Sale, the Edinburg Fall Fest and the Fiesta de Noche Buena. Edinburg is also home to the Museum of South Texas History.
