Eddystone is a historic Delaware River borough
Inspired by a beacon of light in the English Channel, the borough of Eddystone outside Chester came to England's aid in the Great War over a century ago, producing nearly 2 million rifles in what was then the United States' largest factory. Today, the community's industrial legacy remains visible in the ports, warehouses and plants along the Delaware River. Sandwiched between the industrial riverfront sector and Interstate 95, Eddystone today holds a community with about 2,500 residents. Close to Philadelphia and a large retail center in the neighborhood, residents and commuters can easily shop for groceries or other essentials as they return from work by the docks or an office in the big city a few miles away.
Brick row houses line the streets
Eddystone's founders established the borough in the late 1800s around a print works named after a picturesque lighthouse in southwest England. As significant ship, iron and weapon factories opened in the ensuing years, the borough's residential section grew on the east bank of Ridley Creek. Arranged in an urban grid pattern, the community's collection of flat-roofed brick row houses and Colonial-style twins from the early 20th Century average about $175,000. "For the most part, it's like a quiet suburb," Veronica Woods, a local real estate advisor and investor with the Daniel Woods Real Estate Company, says of the area. "One of the main draws to living in the area is that you're near Philadelphia and across the bridge from New Jersey."
Students can walk to Eddystone Elementary
Parents in Eddystone can walk their small children to class, as Eddystone Elementary School is located within the neighborhood. Part of the Ridley School District, Eddystone's students typically advance to Ridley Middle School and Ridley High School. The high school, which has a B rating from Niche, features a variety of programs, including broadcasting and environmental studies.
Eddystone Crossing has shopping and restaurants
The Eddystone Crossing occupies a large swath of the neighborhood, with ample parking lots attached to the Walmart and ShopRite supermarket, the shopping plaza's two anchors. While Popeye's and McDonald's there provide fast food options for the community and commuters traveling along I-95, a few local spots have built themselves as community institutions over the years. Opened in 1970, Vicki's Cold Cuts has served countless hoagies and cheesesteaks from its modest low-slung shop two blocks from Eddystone's borough hall and police department. On Chester Pike, the community's main local thoroughfare, Portobello Café serves classy Italian pasta, meat and seafood dishes inspired by the owner Antonio Logioia's upbringing in the country's Basilicata region.
Tony Daliessio Park is the neighborhood's small outdoor space
With the community largely developed and urban in form, residents typically leave the neighborhood to enjoy nature. However, anyone seeking a small respite from the paved asphalt and masonry walls can take a moment at Tony Daliessio Park, whether taking the kids to its playground or letting their dog run free.
The train and Interstate 95 lead to Philadelphia
Commuters can easily reach I-95 and Interstate 476 from the neighborhood, streamlining the daily commute for many residents. You can drive to Center City Philadelphia, about 16 miles away, or board a 40-minute commuter train at the Eddystone SEPTA station. Setting out for a business trip or far-flung vacation can be a breeze, as you can jet out from Philadelphia International Airport, just a few miles away along I-95.
