Edgewater, Maryland, is a small community of just under 9,000 people. It sits across the South River from the state capital in Annapolis, and throughout its history, it has been defined by its proximity to the water. Marinas are ubiquitous along the shoreline, while houses further inland rest in quiet clusters amid pockets of Maryland’s rural woodland. Despite its size, the community enjoys a fair share of local businesses and restaurants along Mayo Road, many of which are longtime staples. “It’s pretty close-knit and small,” says Ashley Fetterolf, assistant branch manager at Edgewater Library for the past 3 years. “We have easy access to D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis, but people like to stay around here. People think of it as a suburb, but when you’re here you really feel like you’re in a small town.”

The Edgewater Library hosts events throughout the year
Edgewater residents are only 8 miles from downtown Annapolis and 30 miles from Washington, D.C., but they do not need to leave their city for events. “We’re really proud of the work we do here at the library,” Fetterolf says. “We do story times for young kids, STEM programs for elementary-age kids, and we do Chromebook giveaways and have a summer reading program that anyone can participate in. People commit to reading a certain amount per day, and they get to collect prizes for meeting goals.” The library also hosts local bands for live performances throughout the year.

Edgewater Park and the Chesapeake Bay
Edgewater Park, adjacent to Edgewater Elementary School, is a central green space for the community that features baseball diamonds and athletic fields for outdoor play. Residents can also head to the peninsula, where Beverly Triton Beach Park and Mayo Beach Park offer shoreline access and look directly out on the Chesapeake Bay. Locals will often be found on their boats fishing within view of these two county-run beaches until sunset in the summer months.
