South River High School is your typical big, public school with a huge emphasis on sports. The facilities are extremely outdated and the arts have a severe lack of funding, but the teachers are pretty good.

South River is an excellent school regardless of whether your children are in STEM or not. The STEM program admission (and all other magnet program admissions in AACPS) are purely lottery based.
