San Pedro offers seclusion and natural scenery
San Pedro lies in an area that was once a destination for copper, gold and silver mining. Today, this community in the rural and hilly region east of Albuquerque attracts those seeking seclusion amid rich natural scenery. San Pedro is one of several communities located along New Mexico State Road 14, or the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway. The popular road passes through an area with much of the blueish mineral and mountains covered in patches of juniper and pinyon trees. “It’s gorgeous out there,” says Jeanette Raver, a broker with Realty One of New Mexico. “It’s like a bedroom community, and it’s just privacy that you don’t have in town. The houses are not right on top of each other, and a big thing is there is just hardly any crime.”
Farmhouses and ranch-style homes come with extra space
Many homes here are off dirt paths and on gated properties far removed from the area’s main roads. A mix of open spaces and dense groups of pine trees surround homes, several of which stand on lots that are well over 10 acres. “You definitely have some acreage and a little space,” Raver says. “You definitely have space for animals.” Houses here include ranch-style homes, farmhouses and a few Spanish Revivals. Homes don’t often go on the market, with only three selling between January and August 2025. A few homes about 1,500 square feet or less sell from $250,000 to $400,000, while some slightly larger ones go for over $600,000.
Recreation includes hiking and golf
The nearby mountains and peaks offer limited hiking, and those exploring the hills may pass by old mining shafts. Outdoor spots include the San Pedro Mountain mining area and the Ortiz Mountains to the north. Although there is currently no public access to the Ortiz Mountains, Santa Fe County is working on bringing back guided hikes to the preserve. “The Sandia Mountains are there, too,” Raver says. “There are a lot of trails to walk and explore.” Over 20 miles west of San Pedro, the Sandias have over 200 miles of hiking trails and a ski resort. San Pedro is less than 10 miles east of the Paako Ridge Golf Club, which Golf Digest ranked among the country’s 100 best public courses for 2024. The club offers a tree-lined, 18-hole course and views of the surrounding mountains.
Nearest restaurants serve sandwiches, ice cream and bar fare
San Pedro doesn’t have any restaurants or stores, so its residents must leave the community to dine out and shop. About 10 miles southwest, San Antonito is one of the nearest communities with restaurants. Staples there include Lantern Ridge Farm Market and Nursery, where many go for coffee, sandwiches and hand-served ice cream. Other items at the rustic business include plants, local honeys and goat and sheep milk cheese. A little farther south, Ribs Hickory Pit BBQ is known for its variety of grilled and smoked meats. Less than 20 miles south of San Pedro, Smith’s and Walmart in Edgewood offer some grocery and retail shopping options.
Students may attend Moriarty and Edgewood schools
The area's schools include South Mountain Elementary and Edgewood Middle, both of which receive A-minus grades from Niche. Students may then finish at Moriarty High School, which gets a B-minus. The high school’s clubs include a new robotics team that won a state championship in 2025 and went on to a world tournament that same year.
Many may go to Edgewood to send off the summer
Edgewood offers one of the nearest places for annual festivities. Many may send off the summer and welcome the fall with September’s SummerFest in Venus Park. While listening to live bands, attendees may pick up a variety of food truck fare and hang out with some cold craft brews in a beer garden.
Commuters can take State Road 14 to go to Albuquerque
Many here drive to commute. New Mexico State Road 14 goes to Interstate 40, which provides a route to Albuquerque, about 35 miles southwest. The Albuquerque area is home to the Albuquerque International Sunport, the region’s hub for commercial flights. Located less than 30 miles southwest of San Pedro, Albuquerque’s Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital is one of the nearest major health facilities. The hospital’s services include emergency and pediatric care.
