The name Swan Lake might evoke visions of Tchaikovsky’s ballet for some, but for residents of this north Edmond suburb, it’s synonymous with home. Schools, grocery stores, restaurants and parks are all within a mile of the neighborhood, and downtown Edmond is less than 2 miles away. Homebuyers from all walks of life are also drawn to the neighborhood for its cost-effective homes with individual pizazz. “The nice thing about all of these houses being so different is that there really is something for everyone here. That’s not always true when people say it of some neighborhoods, but it is here,” says Judy Rutledge, an agent with Keller Williams Central Oklahoma. “If you’re a first-time buyer looking for an older home with good bones, Swan Lake has it, and if you’re looking for a home to retire in where you don’t need to do anything cosmetic at all, Swan Lake has that, too.”
Comforting breakfast at Yolkizz Café
The neighborhood is less than a mile away from grocery stores and restaurants and less than 2 miles from downtown Edmond. Aldi is only a mile away on Kelly Avenue. Yolkizz Café, 1 mile north on Danforth Road, is a laid-back diner known for its comforting brunch fare. Biscuits and gravy, thick-cut French toast and homey skillets are menu staples. Need a sweet treat or late-night craving fix? The Baked Bear serves up cookies and ice cream — with the option to combine the two into a customizable ice cream sandwich — and is open until 10 p.m. Second Street and Broadway intersect in the heart of downtown, which has restaurants like The Mule, a pub with American fare and nine varieties of the namesake drink. Edmond Railyard is a sprawling food hall with eight restaurants spread across a 10,000-square-foot building and an impressive covered outdoor patio.

Outdoor fun at Chitwood Park
Chitwood Park takes up one block between West First Street and North Main Street only a mile away. The park features a spaceship-themed playground, basketball courts and a quarter-mile paved trail. The park’s covered pavilion and ample green space make it a popular venue for parties and events. It’s also across the street from Barnett Field Splash Pad, which has several water features that turn on with the press of a button to conserve water. Mitch Park, about 3 miles away, has an expansive trail system, a playground, a disc golf course and the YMCA. The trails connect to the Edmond Skatepark, which is located behind Cheyenne Middle School. Those who enjoy a bit of adventure can explore the ruins of Gandini’s Circus down the road, adjacent to the Chateau Villa neighborhood. While the relationship of Gandini’s Circus to the urban legend site is unknown, the site is home to the now-abandoned winter camp of the Hagen Bros. and Clyde Bro. circus companies, harkening back to a time when suburban residents could catch glimpses of circus tents and animals grazing off of Kelly Avenue. A decaying, overgrown wooden building once house circus employees, and graffiti-covered trailers and train cars once transported elephants, tigers, bears and other animals. Intrepid explorers should be wary of ticks during the summer months and take proper precautions.
Families can easily enjoy a game of basketball at Chitwood Park.

1980s homes with individual flair
The sidewalk-lined streets of Swan Lake reveal an array of warm, earth-toned homes with angular roofs and unique design elements that make each home individualistic. Stone facades, diamond and octagon-shaped windows, farmhouse-style shutters and strong lines give each house its own flair, while unfussy but neatly trimmed front lawns and garden beds bring cohesion to the neighborhood. “The first thing you notice about these homes is they’re all different, but they have the same attention to detail,” Rutledge says. “There’s not a single house here that’s the sore thumb of the block. Since this development was started in the ‘80s, you’d expect to find one or two of the houses here a little worse for wear, but it’s all very well-maintained.” The neighborhood also has some duplexes, which can range from $125,000 to $200,000. First-time homebuyers are drawn to the neighborhood for its cost-effective homes, many of which have been updated or remodeled in recent years. Prices range from $200,000 to $250,000.
