Apollo Heights offers convenient commutes and mountain backdrops
Apollo Heights is a quiet suburban neighborhood in Northeast El Paso with mountain views and immediate highway access. “It’s right off U.S. 54, and that’s a thruway that can really get you anywhere,” says Justin Cates, a Realtor with New Beginnings Realty who grew up in Apollo Heights. “It’s a very pretty drive through Transmountain, and even just looking out of your backyard or your front yard and being at the foothills of the Franklin Mountains is pretty special.” El Paso’s main military base, Fort Bliss, is a major employer in the area, with direct access via U.S. Route 54. “A lot of families live there – a lot of military, even retired military, live in that Apollo Heights area,” Cates says. Plus, residents don’t have to travel far for everyday needs, with shops, restaurants, schools and hospitals just a few minutes away.

Ranch-style homes built in the 1970s are common in Apollo Heights
Apollo Heights’ residential streets are full of ranch-style homes that tend to sit behind small front yards, sidewalks, cypress trees and shrubbery. Almost every property was built in the 1970s, and they sell for between $140,000 and $290,000. Though housing variety is limited, the occasional split-level stands out among scores of single-story properties, and some homes feature Spanish Colonial Revival aesthetics. Apollo Heights’ median sale price of $207,500 is well below the citywide median of $263,000. Though U.S. Route 54 runs along the neighborhood’s western border, the highway’s elevation, lack of local offramps and the community’s horizontal layout mean that traffic noise isn’t as prevalent as in other parts of the Northeast.

Veterans Park and the Franklin Mountains put outdoor activities nearby
While Apollo Heights is almost entirely residential, Veterans Park puts outdoor activities across Rushing Road on the neighborhood’s east side. “Veterans Park is probably one of the larger, most prominent parks, definitely in the northeast side of town, even in all of El Paso,” Cates says. The park includes five ballfields, a playground, a skatepark, and an indoor swimming pool. The Veterans Recreation Center offers indoor basketball and a weightlifting room in addition to Halloween events. The Franklin Mountains not only form a scenic backdrop for life in Apollo Heights – hikers can trek from the nearby Chuck Heinrich Trailhead through shrubby foothills and into both caves and historic tin mines. “Even more than that, just the sheer mountain views are breathtaking. They’re majestic,” Cates says.

Route 54 connects commuters to military and downtown jobs
Apollo Heights’ location along U.S. Route 54 connects it to downtown El Paso within a 15-mile drive. “It’s a very good place, especially if one spouse works on the Eastside and one spouse works on the Westside,” Cates says. Fort Bliss is less than 10 miles away, and residents who commute to the White Sands Missile Range can drive 90 miles up the highway. El Paso International Airport is just over 10 miles to the southeast. The Hospitals of Providence Northeast Campus, the local medical center, is accessible within 3 miles.
