Historic, northern El Paso enclave
El Paso’s Austin Terrace neighborhood is one of the oldest in the city, crafted by local architects to have distinct, eye-catching homes. The community came about at the turn of the 20th century, when the city was mapping out subdivisions in the areas between downtown and Fort Bliss. “It’s an older community," says Brittany Birdwell, a broker with Re/Max Associates who has lived in the El Paso area for over a decade. "A lot of the people who live there bought their homes around the ’70s, and they still live there.” The northern El Paso neighborhood is now sought after mainly for its homes, as well as its proximity to several major roads that allow for easy traveling around the city and access to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Historic homes crafted by local architects
Local architects designed several impressive examples in Mission Revival, Adobe, and Mediterranean styles, as well as a few eclectic options, most on large lots with spacious yards. Homes in the neighborhood usually start around $200,000, although historic homes on larger lots can list upwards of $450,000. Fort Bliss brings plenty of military personnel into and out of the area for short stints, but Austin Terrace is one of the few neighborhoods with numerous longtime residents, so housing stock can be low. There are also rental homes scattered around the neighborhood.

Pennsylvania Circle Park is the neighborhood's greenspace
A distinct layout separates Austin Terrace from its neighbors. The neighborhood radiates out from a figure 8 of two circular patterns separated by Hastings Drive. Pennsylvania Circle Park, in the lower circle, serves as the heart of the neighborhood, with several benches and a lawn. St. Anthony Seminary, a Franciscan theological school, sits in the other circle. St. Anthony's is home to the long-running annual bazaar that's filled with carnival rides and local vendors. A few miles away, Washington Park hosts community events throughout the year, right next to the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Memorial Park, about 2 miles away, has paved walking trails and a playground.

Fort Bliss and proximity to El Paso International Airport
The Austin Terrace neighborhood is less than a mile from Fort Bliss, a massive United States Army Forces Command installation spanning 1,700 square miles. Residents heading to base can take a quick drive on Route 54, one of the major highways in the area.
Proximity to Interstate 10 provides an easy route to Downtown El Paso, about 5 miles away. El Paso’s public transportation system, the Sun Metro, has several stops in and around the neighborhood. El Paso also has several entry points to Mexico, including the Stanton-Lerdo bridge, about 4 miles from Austin Terrace.
The neighborhood is also a few miles from El Paso International Airport, but residents don't worry about flyover noise. For medical care, the University Medical Center of El Paso is 2 miles away.
El Paso ISD schools and the Loretto Academy
Kids in Austin Terrace will likely start school at Hillside Elementary School, part of the El Paso Independent School District, with a B-minus grade on Niche. Coach Wally Hartley School is one of the newer middle schools in the area, completed in early 2024 with a fine arts building, renovated cafeteria and classroom upgrades. Most kids on the eastern side of El Paso attend Burges High School, rated B-minus. The Burges Early College High School program includes free tuition and academic support, allowing students to receive their high school degree and an associate degree in arts or science. Austin Terrace is also home to the Loretto Academy, a private, faith-based school founded in 1923.
Since 1951, Hillside Elementary has been nurturing minds in the heart of Austin Terrace.

Live music at Carlos & Mickey's
The Chelmont Center shopping center has an Albertsons for groceries and a few fast-food options. “It doesn’t matter where you’re at in town, you can find an amazing Mexican restaurant or a great sushi place. We just have such a huge variety,” Birdwell says. Chepe’s sells tamales by the dozen, while Los Bandidos De Carlos & Mickey’s is a popular Tex-Mex spot less than 2 miles away, offering occasional live music. “It’s one of the big staples in El Paso,” Birdwell says.
