Underneath the mountains
At the base of the Franklin Mountains, beneath the wide-open and clear Texas sky, is Central, a residential El Paso area packed with one-story homes. This gridded neighborhood, where houses sit right next to each other behind stone and iron fences, is busy with traffic from Fort Bliss, the U.S. Army base next door. But the backdrop of the mountains and the wide cracked streets with paved sidewalks give it a sense of calm. “The mountains are a big draw. I personally love going down there. It’s such a scenic view. They make me feel at home, like I’m in El Paso,” says Angeline Gomez, an El Paso native and Realtor with Texas Ally Real Estate Group.

Rental properties and military families
Many renters live in Central, and it’s a popular place to pick up an investment property. Houses are generally one-story structures in dusty shades built with stucco and stone. Most homes have driveways where neighbors park their RVs, and carports keep the sun at bay. Home construction happened in the mid-20th century, but some houses, like ranch-style homes with shingle roofs, were remodeled. Prices range from $98,000 to $412,000. Some neighbors are in the military and want to be close to Fort Bliss. “I own an investment company where I rent out and purchase a lot of houses. A lot are from people in military,” says Gomez. “Either our rentals are always occupied with military people, or we’re purchasing houses from military people.”

For a weekly grocery haul, Walmart Supercenter is a 5-minute drive. Mexican desserts are baked daily at Sweet Life Bakery, which has been in the community for 30 years.
