Chamberino has a good location for farming or commuting

Chamberino rests in the Mesilla Valley about halfway between El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico. “It’s located really well — you have options for work either way,” says Eli Berger, a third-generation Las Cruces resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker Legacy Elite. Despite the proximity to city jobs, he says, “Chamberino is basically a farming community.”Early residents came to the area in the mid-1800s, and they cleared the fertile land along the Rio Grande to make fields. In the 1880s, a flash flood swept through the area, destroying crops and many of the early homes. Residents rebuilt their houses along the hillside to the west, where the community is still centered today. Pecan orchards, vineyards and farms cover most of the remaining land.

Hillside homes and lots of farms

In the hillside portion of Chamberino, stucco-sided ranch-style and old adobe homes line a compact grid of streets. Throughout the rest of the community, Spanish-style farmhouses and manufactured homes are mixed in between wide fields and orchards. Though land sometimes comes up for sale, houses rarely come on the market, Berger says. According to a Homes.com calculation, which uses a combination of estimate data, the average home value in the community was around $350,000 in early 2025.Some residents have access to community water, but many homeowners maintain private wells and septic systems. Chamberino has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally.

Car travel along Route 28 and other logistics

Residents rely on cars for travel. The main thoroughfare, state Route 28, is a narrow, two-lane road, occasionally used by farm vehicles, which can slow the flow of traffic. Las Cruces is about 25 miles north, and El Paso, Texas, which has an international airport, is approximately 30 miles southeast. The closest emergency room is less than 15 miles away, at The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus.

Drinks and music at Sombra Antigua Winery or Icebox 28 Beer Garden

Chamberino residents can bask in their pastoral surroundings at the Sombra Antigua Vineyard and Winery along La Vina Road. It offers house-made wines accompanied by cheese platters, sandwiches and other light meals. The winery also hosts live music and gatherings throughout the year. Past events have included a Louisiana-style shrimp boil, complete with a performance by a local blues band. Icebox 28 Beer Garden is also in the community. On weekends, there’s often live music on the patio, and patrons can sip craft beers and eat tacos or pizza.

La Mesa restaurants and nearby retail options

For other dining options, some people drive into La Mesa, about 8 miles north. Casa El Camino specializes in Guadalajaran-style cuisine, including panela cheese-topped molcajetes and beef birria. Berger recommends Chope’s Town Cafe and Bar, a casual family-owned restaurant that has served the region since 1915.The closest grocery store is Lowe’s Mercado, about 8 miles southeast in Anthony, Texas. There are malls in both Las Cruces and El Paso, but The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso are only 13 miles from many Chamberino homes.

Community parks and area outdoor recreation

While many residents have acres of land for farming and riding horses, there are also a few community gathering spaces. At Chamberino Townsite, there is a fenced baseball field with shaded bleachers. Members of the nearby Anthony Country Club can play the 9-hole riverside course or swim in the pool. The surrounding desert and mountains also provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. About 30 miles west, at Aden Lava Flow Wilderness, there are volcanic craters and dunes to explore. Franklin Mountains State Park is less than 20 miles southeast, with more than 100 miles of trails and two popular climbing areas.

Flash flood risks during summer monsoons

A system of dams regulates the Rio Grande, and in spring, the dams typically open, filling irrigation ditches. Summer monsoon rains bring additional water and can sometimes lead to flash flooding, especially in arroyos and narrow canyons. New residents should familiarize themselves with area flood maps, especially before hiking.
