A view of the sky near El Paso International Airport
Ask an El Pasoan what they think of when they hear “Cielo Vista” and most will likely respond: “The mall.” Wedged between Interstate 10 and Texas State Highway 62, the East Side neighborhood is indeed home to a sizable mall that shares its name, plus several big-box stores and retail centers. But the answer is also in the stars: Cielo Vista is Spanish for “sky view,” and El Paso International Airport sits on the northern side of Highway 62, giving the celestial concept a firmer footing. “It’s one of the more popular neighborhoods in El Paso, a very stable area,” says Charlie Clark, broker and owner of Century 21 Clark Brothers Inc. “You have a lot of people who live in the area and don’t want to move. They only move when they die.”
The sky’s the limit at Cielo Vista shopping mall
The Cielo Vista shopping mall is tucked alongside Interstate 10, featuring department stores like JCPenney, Sears, Dillard’s and Macy’s, with clothing retailers, jewelers and video game stores filling the gaps. Shoppers can grab lunch at a counter-service eatery inside or relax at a table in one of the restaurants surrounding the mall. Olive Garden, Hooters and Landry’s Seafood House represent a sampling of the food options, while Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club are nearby for groceries and other essentials.

Sidewalks connecting 1950s ranch-style homes
With wide paved sidewalks bordering the grid of residential streets, Cielo Vista is a highly walkable neighborhood. Since the buildings in this area are primarily apartments or retail space, about half of the residents are renters, and single-family houses make up less than 25 percent of the property mix. Most are ranch-style homes dating to the 1950s or ’60s, with brick construction and attached garages or carports. Prices start at $250,000 and top off around $500,000. Homes with a higher price point might include amenities like heated in-ground pools or proximity to the Lone Star Golf Club.

El Paso Tennis Academy at Cielo Vista Park
Life in Cielo Vista offers a myriad of outdoor recreation. Lone Star Golf Club is a public 18-hole course with putting greens, a pro shop and a fully lit driving range. “It’s a very easy course to play, so it’s popular,” Clark says. “On Saturdays, the tee times are pretty much booked until one or two in the afternoon.” Adjacent to the golf course, a small playground sits in the center of an open green field at Hawkins Park, which is also home to an indoor swimming pool. El Paso Tennis Academy teaches kids how to perfect their backhand at Cielo Vista Park. In addition to tennis courts, the shady green space features a playground, swing set and basketball court. An exercise trail curves through Edgemere Linear Park, with loops on either end to create a graceful circuit. Nearby, a memorial at Ponder Park pays tribute to the 23 victims of the 2019 shooting at an El Paso Walmart, with granite pillars arranged in the shape of a crown. The earthen walking path weaves past the memorial, picnic areas, a baseball diamond and a pine-tree-themed playground.

Important considerations
Despite the airport, noise is generally not an issue in Cielo Vista. “The flight patterns avoid that area,” Clark says. “All the flight patterns are predominantly over Fort Bliss, the military base here, which is north of that neighborhood.” Also, while air pollution is a concern throughout El Paso, much of it wafts from the long lines of idling traffic around the Bridge of the Americas on the Mexican border. Cielo Vista is more than 6 miles from the bridge, so the issue isn’t as pronounced as in some South-Central neighborhoods.
Soldiercon in September
The Starlight Event Center, next to El Paso International Airport, is home to September’s Soldiercon event. The three-day convention serves and celebrates the military community with a combination of cosplay, car shows and comic vendors. Admission is free for all military personnel.
