Collingsworth is close to Ascarate Park and major highways
Most homes in Collingsworth are within walking distance of Ascarate Park, one of El Paso’s largest city parks. Residents are also within a mile of major traffic arteries. Downtown El Paso is about 5 miles away, and the U.S.-Mexico border is less than a mile. “Down in the valley, you have good access to I-10 and the 375 Loop,” says Daisy Aguirre, a listing specialist for Homegirl Real Estate Firm with 15 years of experience in the area. “Proximity to employment would be a draw for that area,” adds Dora Camarena, a Realtor with Sandy Masser & Associates who has been selling in El Paso for 34 years. “You have retail, schools and Ascarate Park.” Lower-than-average home prices also make for appealing investment opportunities.
Fishing, swimming and golfing at Ascarate Park
Ascarate Park has playgrounds, athletic fields, picnic areas and an aquatic center with an outdoor pool. A boardwalk and walking path run alongside the 48-acre lake stocked with fish. Kayaks and small boats are welcome as long as they’re not outfitted with more than a trolling motor. The onsite golf course features an 18-hole main course and a nine-hole short course, plus a driving range, putting greens, a pro shop and a clubhouse café. The Healing Garden, also in the park, is a peaceful memorial honoring the victims of the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting. Like many Lower Valley neighborhoods, Collingsworth is home to a sizable Hispanic population. Residents have a short walk to Clardy Fox Library, which hosts English language programs and citizenship classes.
Ranch-style and shotgun homes packed tightly together
Most Collingsworth homes were built between 1920 and 1960. “Over the years, some new construction has come in, but it’s an older neighborhood,” Camarena says. Most ranch-style and shotgun homes are built closely together, though a few lots measure up to half an acre. A few houses feature Spanish-influenced touches like stucco walls and terra cotta roof tiles. Many properties include paved driveways and strips of front lawn bordered with chain-link or picket fencing. Paved sidewalks border most streets, and street parking is common. Starter homes and investment properties typically range from $100,000 to $200,000, while ranch-style homes fetch $200,000 to $300,000. A slight majority of residents are renters, and a few apartment complexes and townhomes are mixed in among the single-family homes. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4.
Getting to downtown El Paso via I-10 or the 375 Loop
Commuters to downtown El Paso have a 5-mile drive via Interstate 10 or the 375 Loop. Buses on the Sun Metro transit system stop on Delta Drive and Alameda Avenue en route to the Downtown Transfer Center or the University Medical Center of El Paso, about a mile away. El Paso International Airport is about 3 miles away. The Bridge of the Americas, about 2 miles away, connects to Ciudad Juárez on the Mexican side of the border. Idling traffic at border checkpoints can affect air quality; effects are measurable throughout the city but especially pronounced in neighborhoods closest to the border.
Jefferson High School is known for its sports programs
Most students start at Cooley Elementary School, which sits just outside the neighborhood and receives a C-plus from Niche. The Dr. Josefina V. Tinajero school, which opened in August 2022, serves students from prekindergarten through eighth grade and is currently unrated. C-rated Jefferson High School is known for its sports programs, including football, basketball and volleyball. The ongoing Destination District Redesign program allocates resources to ensure all area students have access to a quality education.
Ascarate Flea Market sets up shop on weekends
Collingsworth is home to Ascarate Flea Market, one of El Paso’s largest outdoor flea markets. Weekend vendors set up stalls in a sprawling parking lot to sell fresh fruit, baked goods, clothing, jewelry, handbags and more. Groceries and Mexican favorites are available at Pinky’s Market & Restaurant. Food King supermarket is also nearby, across the road from discount clothing stores and fast-food chains at Fox Plaza shopping center.
Seasonal events fill the calendar at Ascarate Park
Seasonal events keep things lively at Ascarate Park. Dads N’ Rides revs up on Father’s Day with a car show, food trucks and live music, and Parks After Sunset is a free summer movie series featuring family-friendly flicks. In late March, the Big El Paso Fair transforms the park into a festive carnival with rides, live entertainment and classic fair food.
A mile from St. Pius X Catholic Church
Several churches are tucked into the residential area, including Santo Nino De Atocha. The neighborhood is about a mile from St. Pius X, another gathering place for the Catholic community. “St. Pius is a landmark in our city, so a lot of people appreciate being that close to it,” Aguirre says.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
