Affordable El Paso suburb zoned for highly rated schools
Indian Ridge South is a more affordable alternative to other neighborhoods in the highly rated Ysleta Independent School District. This residential landscape includes a walkable elementary and middle school. Yet J.M. Hanks High School is one of the main neighborhood draws. "You get the same access to the highly rated high schools that you're not having to pay a premium for," says Brian Burds, team leader with Exp Realty in El Paso.
Early college credits at J.M. Hanks High School
Pebble Hills Elementary School and J.M. Hanks Middle School are within walking distance. Widely-available sidewalks help to make it safer. The elementary school earns a B-plus from Niche, while the middle school earns a B. The A-minus-rated J.M. Hanks High School offers up to 67 hours of college credits through dual credit and advancement placement classes. The program encourages students to earn an associate degree along with their high school diploma.
Starter homes with Spanish Revival influence
Ranch-style and split-level homes are tucked between the schools. Many have Spanish Revival features such as arched entryways, terra cotta roofs, wrought iron detailing and front courtyards. Prices are generally lower than other neighborhoods in the same school zone, according to Burds. They typically range from around $200,000 to $300,000. The neighborhood has a low CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, and gated entryways add an additional sense of security. Front yards are meticulously landscaped with stones and desert foliage.
Shaded playgrounds, walking trails and group activities
Green spaces dot the city's east side. Pebble Hills Park offers shade from the hot El Paso sun with a covered playground. The open, grassy field is also large enough for a football game. Eastwood Park is an east-side magnet with a skate park, dog park, sports facilities and a walking trail across its 47 acres. The park's Gary Del Palacio Recreation Center is also a hub for city-organized activities, including table tennis, dodgeball and pickleball.
Mexican grocers and birria tacos
Montwood Drive is the nearest shopping hub, featuring a collection of local and chain stores. Doctors' offices, gas stations, fast-food restaurants and grocery stores line the strip. Food King, Target, and Albertsons are all within 2 miles. Papa's Fruit Store is one local option specializing in Mexican products. The dining scene mainly centers around Mexican cuisine. Birria Culiacan specializes in birria tacos, featuring slow-cooked meat, cheese and consommé dipping broth.
Family-friendly activities at Gary Del Palacio Recreation Center
Some special events take place at neabry parks. Gary Del Palacio Recreation Center draws hosts arts and crafts on Mother's Day, competitive games on National Family Day and coloring activities on International Harry Potter Day. Residents also take part in city-wide celebrations. The Sun Bowl Thanksgiving parade is an annual highlight for the region, with elaborate floats and costumed characters. It draws about 250,000 spectators every year.
Major highways and public transportation throughout El Paso
Sidewalks add walkability to the neighborhood. Residents also rely on cars and public transit to get around. Montana Avenue connects to the city center, about 15 miles west. That connection will soon improve as it turns into a major highway. Sun Metro's 51, 52 and 69 buses serve the neighborhood and lead throughout the city's east side.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
