Between the Franklin Mountains and I-10
The Franklin Mountains loom over the horizon in Mesa Hills, a residential neighborhood that rises above the curve of Interstate 10 in Western El Paso. When Spanish explorers discovered the American Southwest, they used the word “mesa” — meaning “table” — to describe the flat-topped hills they found scattered at the base of mountain ranges. Erosion created the mesas when surrounding water washed away the tops of the hills, but the neighborhood isn’t in danger of crumbling anytime soon. “A lot of houses have views of the mountains or the valley,” says Charlie Clark, broker and owner of Century 21 Clark Brothers, Inc. “They build on those mesas because they’re elevated, so they’re prime spots for luxury homes.” With the University of Texas at El Paso just 3 miles south, apartments are more common than single-family homes. But a top-rated high school and proximity to scenic hikes make Mesa Hills an appealing option for buyers.
The Mesa Hills neighborhood offers plenty of activities for all ages.
Mesa Hills offers trails perfect for jogging, biking or a relaxing walk in nature.

BMX and bathing suits at Galatzan Park
Opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation are plentiful in Mesa Hills. The BMX track, gymnasium and playing fields at Galatzan Park and Recreation Center are next door to Westside Natatorium, an indoor swimming pool. At Crestmont Park, visitors can spread out for a picnic on the grassy field or watch the little ones romp around on the shaded playground. The Shoppes at Solana mall is home to Jungle Reef, an immersive aquarium experience featuring stingray and shark tanks, a bird enclosure, an otter experience and a snake pit. Nearby, the Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park is available for kids’ birthday parties. Movie fans catch the latest flicks while sipping microbrews at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on Montecillo Boulevard. The neighborhood is also close to the Thousand Steps Trail, a challenging 2.8-mile loop with arresting views of downtown El Paso.
Charles Murphree School connections
From its perch atop a short hill on Cabaret Drive, Charles Murphree School is within walking distance of many neighborhood homes. Kids attend Charles Murphree, which earns a Niche grade of C, from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. At the A-minus-rated Coronado High School, students can earn college credits in several disciplines, including Spanish Language and Literature.
Spanish Revival homes with stucco walls and rock gardens
Nearly 80 percent of Mesa Hills residents are renters, with apartments and homes making up most of the property mix. Condo and apartment complexes crisscross the landscape, with most single-family homes gathering at the neighborhood’s northern tip. A two-bedroom condo unit might sell for $180,000 to $200,000. Near Crestmont Park, ranch-style homes with cross-gabled roofs are priced from $200,000 to $350,000. Buyers can expect to spend $200,000 to $425,000 on a two-story Spanish Revival home with barrel-tile roofing and stucco exterior walls. Because of the desert setting, rock gardens stand in place of grassy lawns. Residential lots typically measure under a quarter acre, but large commercial lots are also available, starting at around $600,000 and climbing to the $5 million range.
Shopping sprees at The Shoppes at Solana
North Mesa Street snakes through the foothills at the neighborhood’s eastern edge, passing numerous shopping and dining options. Domed glass cases put tempting baked goods on display at Wake & Bake, a coffee shop that also specializes in plants and garden accessories. Malolam presents creative Mexican cuisine and cocktails in a funky converted housing block with outdoor seating. Food King supermarket can be found along North Mesa Street as well. Next to I-10, The Shoppes at Solana mall offers more retail therapy with shops like Starr Western Wear, Hollister Co., Black Flag Outfitters, Dillard’s department store and numerous quick-service restaurants. Following North Mesa Street a few miles south will lead to several restaurants, bars and breweries. "There's a cluster of commercial activity near the university," Clark says.

Islamic Center of El Paso
Across North Mesa Street, the Islamic Center of El Paso welcomes the city’s Muslim community, estimated to have between 2,000 and 3,000 members. The Masjid is always open during congregational prayers and offers weekly classes for youth, women and new Muslims.
Sun Metro buses in Mesa Hills
Sun Metro bus stops are stationed throughout the neighborhood, with particularly dense concentrations along North Mesa Street and South Mesa Hills Drive. Riders can take advantage of these Westside bus routes to make the 3-mile commute to the University of Texas at El Paso or the 4-mile trip to The Hospitals of Providence and Las Palmas Medical Center. Interstate 10 forms the neighborhood’s western border, paving the way to downtown El Paso, 7 miles south. The New Mexico border is right on the other side of the interstate, and El Paso International Airport lies 14 miles to the southeast, on the other side of the Franklin Mountains.
Sun Metro ensures Mesa Hills is connected to the entire city.
Downtown is a quick 7 miles south of Mesa Hills.

Air quality in El Paso
El Paso homebuyers should be mindful that the American Lung Association ranks the city as the 14th-worst in the U.S. for ozone pollution. Long lines of traffic idling near the Paso del Norte International Bridge may exacerbate the issue. However, Mesa Hills is nearly 10 miles from the bridge, so the problem may not be as pronounced as in some South-Central neighborhoods.
