O’Shea Keleher is quiet neighborhood home to 7,000 people

The O’Shea Keleher neighborhood in east El Paso is home to more than 7,000 people. The neighborhood is named for Helen O'Shea Keleher, who in the early 1900s ran what was then referred to as a “poor farm” in the area, providing shelter and care for homeless adults and orphaned children. Today, it is a quiet neighborhood with more than 2,400 homes that were built in the 1980s and 1990s. It is surrounded by retail and other amenities.

Traditional homes with garages and desert-friendly landscaping

Many of the brick, traditional and ranch-style homes are between 1,200 and 2,000 square feet and have garages. Prices range from $190,000 to $300,000. Because of El Paso’s hot, dry climate, many homes don't have lawns but instead use alternative landscaping like gravel or rocks. “It’s called xeriscaping,” says Charles Clark, broker with Clark Brothers Real Estate. “Desert doesn’t really grow a whole lot; the heat is too intense." Sidewalks and desert-friendly greenery, including cypress and palm trees – line the streets. Stone fences are common.

Chain and local grocers and more surround the neighborhood

Clark says one of the neighborhood’s draws is its location. “There's enough commercial development in the area, you pretty much you don’t have to drive miles and miles to get to grocery stores and you’re not too far from more retail shopping.” A large shopping area sits just northwest of the neighborhood near the intersection of Montwood Drive and George Dieter Drive. The area includes Target and other retailers, as well as a Planet Fitness gym. Many grocery stores are also located there, including Albertson’s, Bryant’s Market and the Mexican grocer Papa’s Fruit Store. Morra Mia, a trendy locally owned Mexican restaurant and bar, is also in the plaza. Zaragoza Road, which runs northeast-southwest below the neighborhood, is another major shopping and dining corridor.
