Suburban atmosphere with relative affordability in Pebble Hills Park
Located in eastern El Paso, south of U.S. Route 62 and west of Texas State Highway Loop 375 the Pebble Hills Park neighborhood offers suburban living at a relatively affordable price point. Surrounding its namesake park, brick ranch homes from the 1970s, with a handful of other styles, line the streets. “It’s the original east side,” says Allison Dillard, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “Everything east of the 375 Loop didn’t used to be there.” The neighborhood meets the needs of residents who want the suburban feel without being on the far outskirts of town. “If you’re okay with a slightly older home, it’s a great place to be,” Dillard says.
Ranch-style homes within an expansive atmosphere
Ranch-style homes line the wide streets, some with southwestern adornment or midcentury modern accents, and sandy or gravel yards with sculpted evergreen shrubs and palm trees. “It’s a lot of brick homes in that area,” Dillard says. A handful of split-levels can also be found. Homes typically feature attached garages. Clean sidewalks and the wide-open sky create an expansive atmosphere. “It’s a mix of townhomes and stand-alone homes,” Dillard says. Prices for single-family homes range from $180,000 to $325,000. Condos can cost between $165,000 and $190,000. Homes stay on the market for an average of 34 days, and the neighborhood is nearly 75 percent homeowners.
Early college program part of the draw at J.M. Hanks High School
Families in Pebble Hills Park can send their students to the Ysleta Independent School District, which Niche rates an A-minus. REL Washington Elementary School earns a B-plus, Hanks Middle School earns a B and J.M. Hanks High School earns an A-minus. J.M. Hanks High students can apply to the Early College High School, where they can earn up to 60 college credits through El Paso Community College. Some students can even complete their associate’s degree before graduating high school.
Some options for busing and walking, but largely vehicle-dependent
While residents will probably rely on a car to get around, this neighborhood does have marginally better walking and biking scores than some nearby neighborhoods, according to Walk Score. Buses stop along the nearby major streets, such as Lee Trevino Drive and Pebble Hills Boulevard. Downtown El Paso is about 13 miles west. The El Paso International Airport is just across U.S. Route 62, about 6 miles from the neighborhood. “You’re far enough that you’re not a flyover house,” Dillard says. “It’s anything that’s going to interrupt your garden party.” Interstate 10 is accessible about 3 miles south. Two nearby hospitals are accessible to residents here: Del Sol Medical Center is slightly over 3 miles south, and the Hospitals of Providence East Campus is 4 miles east.
Pebble Hills Park and other recreation choices, both indoor and outdoor
Pebble Hills Park, at the center of the neighborhood, offers the closest outdoor recreation. It has sports courts and fields, places to picnic and a playground. A bit farther west, Eastwood Park, also known as Album Park, has a skate park, tennis courts and a recreation center, along with more sports facilities. El Paso’s “Sun City” nickname is well-earned, and residents can cool off in one of several public pools. The Eastwood Heights Swimming Pool is the nearest to the neighborhood. Cinemark Cielo Vista Mall 14 and XD, under 5 miles away, offers the latest blockbusters and a way to escape summer heat.
Local businesses nearby and big chains along Interstate 10
Food King grocery store is no more than a mile away. Two Mexican restaurants, Del Paso and Los Tres Gallegos, and Anointed Cuisine, a West African eatery, lie at the neighborhood’s southeast corner near the Sunset Center shopping mall. Pebble Village Shopping Center is just across Pebble Hills Boulevard. “There’s lots of nail salons, little eateries, things like that,” Dillard says. “But for serious shopping, you go down to I-10.” About 3 miles south, Interstate 10 is lined with box stores and chains of all kinds.
Downtown events and Christmas light displays
Downtown El Paso is home to events like the Sun City Beer Fest, which brings brewers and bands to town in the summer. Viva! El Paso is a long-running show, now nearly 50 years old, that highlights the city’s important cultural influences. And eastern El Paso neighborhoods go big on Christmas lights. “A lot of the neighborhoods in that area do popular Christmas light shows,” Dillard says, adding that some displays even back up traffic as cars queue up to drive through.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
