Santa Lucia offers affordable homes near the border
Santa Lucia offers easy access to destinations like Downtown El Paso and the U.S.-Mexico border. A part of the city’s Mission Valley area, the community is also close to retail, dining and interstate. “It’s a different type of community than northeast El Paso. It’s heavily Spanish-speaking and a very established area,” says Linda Bastraw, an El Paso native who is also the broker and owner of Linda Bastraw Realty, LLC. Over half of locals rent in Santa Lucia, but buyers will find home values below the rest of the metro area.

Buying a home in Borderland
Santa Lucia contains apartment complexes, single-family homes and multifamily units. Most houses in the neighborhood have stone walls or fencing wrapped around properties. Generally, front yards show drought-friendly native plants and gravel landscaping. The area has ranch-style houses and homes with Mission-style influences, which is common in the region. Housing prices usually range from around $150,000 to $375,000. Bastraw says, unlike other El Paso communities, “there’s still some land left to build a new home in the area.”

El Toro Bronco is a local dining favorite that attracts large crowds from Fridays to Sundays. The Lunch Box, another popular eatery serving Mexican-style options, is a popular breakfast place; however, locals say parking can be challenging during busy hours. Shoppers are also less than 5 miles from Cielo Vista Mall. Bastraw says many take day trips across the border. “With Mexico right there, the entertainment is wonderful. The pricing for food and to have a really nice meal is unbelievable,” Bastraw says.
