Sunrise Acres
Franklin Mountains and Sunrise Park
“The first thing I ask clients interested in Sunrise Acres is if they are outdoor hikers,” says Bidwell. Tucked 11 miles away in the neighboring mountains, Franklin Mountains State Park’s six walking loops are lined with Southwestern barrel cacti that bloom in the spring; the loops range from 6 miles to 16 miles in length, making the park an inviting place for both new and experienced hikers. Roadrunners, golden eagles and over 100 other bird species can be seen flying in the desert sky here, making the Franklin Mountains a popular birdwatching destination. Within the neighborhood, the 8-acre Sunrise Park is lined with sidewalks and offers mountain views, making it a great spot for a run or walk; most of the park consists of flat, unshaded land, but it also has an inviting playground, hard tennis courts and full-sized basketball courts.Midcentury stucco ranch-styles and Spanish Revivals
“It feels like I’m in 1953 when I walk into a lot of the homes here,” says Bidwell. Midcentury brick and stucco ranch-style houses make up the bulk of properties in Sunrise Acres; these range from $170,000 for a three-bed to $350,000 for a four-bed. “This area wasn’t built lot-after-lot like other subdivisions in El Paso,” says Bidwell. “One home would be built at a time with the spaces next to them being filled later, so you end up getting a lot of variety.” Scattered throughout the community, Spanish Revival homes from the 2010s average $375,000 for a three-bed. Most properties have fenced back yards large enough to house a pool, and front yards with gravel or stone landscaping; the roads these houses stand on are lined with broad sidewalks that lead to local schools and parks.
Cool Canyon Nights and Pop Goes the Fort
On Thursday summer evenings, locals can attend the free Cool Canyon Nights concert series at the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. “It’s something I always look forward to,” says Bidwell. “Checking the upcoming bands, eating at the food trucks, being surrounded by the mountains — it’s such a great time.” Fort Bliss’s free Fourth of July event, Pop Goes the Fort, is the biggest in all of El Paso. Hosted in the Biggs Park section of the fort, the event begins with the El Paso Symphony Orchestra playing Boston Pops songs before a firework spectacular kicks off later in the night. Restaurants and caterers offer food trucks, but attendees can also bring their own food for an outdoor picnic underneath the firework-lit sky.Family-owned New Clock and nearby Walmarts
Clocks hang on the walls of family-owned restaurant New Clock, which has served a mixture of Mexican cuisine and American diner food since the 1960s; locals can enjoy sunny side up eggs with grits in the morning and steak tampiqueña in the evening. Afterward, they can get dessert at the local chain Aurora Rolling Ice Cream across the street, where they serve matcha ice cream cups, Hong Kong bubble waffles and more. For groceries, locals have two Walmart locations to choose from: the Walmart Neighborhood Market immediately east of the neighborhood, and the much larger Walmart Supermarket, just 2 miles south. From Park Elementary to Chapin High
Local kids can start at Park Elementary, which receives a B-minus from Niche; named after local politician Edgar Park, the tri-level campus offers a dual-language program. Children can continue to the C-rated Canyon Hills Middle before finishing at the B-plus rated Chapin High. The only school in the country that’s on government property but not owned by the government, its pre-engineering magnet program attracts students throughout El Paso.Route 54 and nearby amenities
Route 54 borders Sunrise Acres to the east, making it easy to commute and reach nearby amenities. Fort Bliss, the workplace for many residents here, is 4 miles away; downtown El Paso is 9 miles to the south, which is only an 11-minute drive on the highway. The closest hospital, the University Medical Center of El Paso, is only 4 miles away, and El Paso International Airport is just a 7-mile trip southeast.
