Tejas is an established neighborhood conveniently located near I-10
The small neighborhood of Tejas in south El Paso developed throughout the 1950s, much of it before the construction of Interstate 10. Today, that highway runs along the neighborhood’s north side. “That area was the heart of El Paso when the interstate came in,” says Albert Aguilar of Mary Aguilar Realtors. “It’s very convenient and still popular. I-10 runs through the middle of El Paso, so being near a freeway doesn’t affect the neighborhood. It’s kind of the norm for E Paso. It actually makes it easier to get around.”

Older homes in a nice, established area
Because most of the homes in Tejas were built by the mid-1950s, they are smaller than the contemporary homes found in other areas of the city. The simple, traditional designs incorporate regional architectural elements such as flat or low-angle roofs. “It’s an established, good neighborhood,” Aguilar says. “It’s older, but nice.”
Water runoff is not a major concern in the city’s arid, high-desert climate. While evergreens and other native trees add to the neighborhood aesthetic, most yards are hardscaped with stone or other materials. This makes upkeep easier in a city that gets limited rainfall. Many homes have created courtyard-style front yards with decorative stone-built walls. Prices typically range from the low $100,000s to the low $200,000s, although the occasional newly built home can sell for nearly $300,000. “The older homes do need some upgraded amenities, depending on the property,” Aguilar says. “But it’s very affordable for the first-time homebuyer.”

Frontage road allows easy access to stores, restaurants around I-10
The Gateway Boulevard frontage road, which separates the neighborhood’s north side from I-10, allows residents to quickly access a large concentration of restaurants and retail stores along the interstate with very little interstate travel. “El Paso is unique in that it has frontage roads on both sides of the freeway,” Aguilar says. “I’ve been to other cities that didn’t have that, and it was weird.” West Texas Chophouse and Pho Tre Bien are popular local chains that stand out among the dining options just minutes away. Big-box retailers include Walmart, Sears and Best Buy. On the other side of the neighborhood, nearby Fox Plaza Shopping Center offers more options. Plenty of contemporary shopping, dining and entertainment can be found in downtown El Paso about 5 miles away.
