Vista De Oro
Ranch-style homes and investment properties where mail still comes to your door
The community’s streets are lined with stone walls, and sidewalks are abundant, making it easy to walk to a neighbor’s house or the store. Most residents do not have lawns, instead filling their front yards with rocks and cacti or other small plants. Ranch-style homes from the 1970s range from $250,000-$375,000, as can multi-level homes. Houses in the southern section of the neighborhood, closer to shopping options, tend to be more expensive. Investment properties are also available, often from $100,000 to $230,000.Gary Wondrash has lived in the neighborhood for more than 25 years and has not considered moving anywhere else. "This is the best place to be in El Paso," Wondrash says. "We enjoy a lot of room on our lots compared to newer houses, and I know my neighbors. It's mostly older folks, and everyone is friendly. We all lend a hand if someone needs it. It's old-school stuff."
In the summer, temperatures can sometimes reach over 110 degrees during the day. “Things cool off at night,” says Tracie Musshorn, a Realtor with Majestic Realty. “It’s not like Arizona where there’s no cool-off point, and it’s not super humid.” Some flooding can occur along Vista Del Sol Drive.
Local restaurants at Trawood Plaza and upscale shopping at The Fountains at Farah
Several restaurants sit in the northwest corner of the neighborhood in Trawood Plaza. Peking Garden serves traditional Chinese entrees for dine-in or takeout. Artesana Bakery has freshly crafted treats every day and a full Mexican breakfast menu Friday through Sunday. Across Trawood Drive, Steakpedos serves variations on cheesesteaks. A few blocks north sits one of East El Paso's popular fine dining establishments, Thirty 5ive Tavern & Grill. General manager Linda Lugo is proud of the restaurant's menu, especially the signature seafood pasta, but she is even more proud of the atmosphere that the space invites. "The community is what makes us special," Lugo says. "The regulars at the bar all know each other. It's almost like a 'Cheers' environment, where everyone is hugging and asking about each other's families." Though the community lacks a traditional grocery store, Eastside Choice Meats is a butcher shop that has served the area for more than 40 years. The store also has canned goods, snacks and other items. The neighborhood is also close to an Albertsons and a Walmart Supercenter. Just west of the neighborhood is The Fountains at Farah, a popular shopping and dining center that opened in 2013, as well as Cielo Vista mall.Way Out West Festival, the Amigo Airsho and minor league baseball
Several events take place close to the community. Downtown, the El Paso Convention Center hosts the annual Way Out West Festival, a celebration with live music, a chili cook-off, a margarita competition and other events. Also downtown, Southwest University Park is the home of the El Paso Chihuahuas minor league baseball team and El Paso Locomotive FC, a USL Championship soccer team. The Amigo Airsho, held at nearby Fort Bliss, has aerial performers doing stunts alongside food trucks and vendors.Highly rated schools in the Ysleta Independent School District
Students are served by the Ysleta Independent School District. They can attend Eastwood Heights Elementary School, which holds an A-minus Niche grade, as does Eastwood Middle School. Eastwood High School offers the OnRamps program, which allows students to earn college credit for completing classes under instruction from a high school teacher and evaluation from a University of Texas faculty member. The school earns an A-minus rating. The private Jesus Chapel School, for kindergarten through 12th grade, also has an A-minus score.Sports at Reese McCord Park and a recreation center at Eastwood Park
Reese McCord Park, the community’s recreation hub, has baseball, soccer and basketball athletic facilities, plus a playground. Other green spaces are within a few miles, like Travis White Park, which has a disc golf course. Eastwood Park, often called Album Park by residents, has a skate park and a recreation center among its many amenities. The nearby YWCA Shirley Leavell Branch has a pool and exercise equipment.Easy access to Interstate 10 and nearby amenities without much traffic
Interstate 10 runs south of the neighborhood and can take residents around 10 miles into downtown El Paso. “The 10 is still our main freeway,” says Belinda Duran, a Realtor with Home Sweet Home. “You’ll see that a little backed up during rush hour but not like in other big cities. You’re not going to spend an hour and a half in traffic. You can get pretty much anywhere in half an hour, and that’s on a bad day.” Northwest of the community, El Paso International Airport is just over 5 miles away. Sun Metro operates public transportation in the city; several bus stops sit along Yarbrough Drive, connecting residents to the rest of El Paso. Del Sol Medical Center, a full-service hospital with a Level II trauma designation, is less than two miles from the community.
