Washington Park is a historic El Paso neighborhood near entertainment districts
Alameda Avenue is one of the oldest streets in El Paso. Before the growth of Interstate 10 in the 1960s, Alameda was one of the city’s busiest and most important highways. Not only did it bring in car traffic, but it contained some of the city’s most recognizable buildings, including the Red Mill Court, a group of hotels and other establishments built with adobe walls and decorated with wagon wheels and other items. It was meant to evoke Spanish-style architecture and feelings of the Old West. Some of those buildings still stand, though they have been worn down with time.
The Washington Park neighborhood that calls Alameda its northern border has faced similar wear and tear. The area has small, older houses, many owned by residents who have called the community home for decades. Yet a few major attractions keep visitors coming, and it is close to growing entertainment districts and spacious parks. Old though the residences may be, there’s plenty of life left in the community.
Washington Park sits right by the U.S.-Mexico border.

Ranch-style homes and investment properties on walkable streets
Ranch-style homes with brick or adobe exteriors often go from $150,000 to $250,000. These homes often date back to the 1940s and 1950s and usually have carports. Yards often have bushes or small trees instead of lawns. Investment properties are also available, usually from $170,000 to $200,000, as is multi-family housing. “I’ve worked with a couple of investors that have recently bought property there and are remodeling them,” says Tracie Musshorn, a Realtor with Majestic Realtors. “They see that it’s more desirable for first-time homebuyers.” Sidewalks are common, and some houses in southern parts of the neighborhood are lined with stone walls in addition to fencing. Though the neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 4 out of 10, in line with the national average, it has higher violent crime scores.
Washington Park has a wide mix of home styles.

The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a draw, as are other nearby parks
The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to more than 200 species of animals, including eight endangered species like the Malayan Tiger. One of the biggest draws is the Chihuahuan Desert section, showcasing plants and wildlife from the El Paso area. “You might think, ‘Why have a zoo section for animals where we live?’” says Oscar Arriaga, the zoo’s marketing coordinator. “But not everyone gets to see Mexican wolves or mountain lions or coatis every day.” Arriaga adds that the zoo does a lot of rehabilitation work with animals like spider monkeys, helping them live fulfilling lives.
Washington Park itself has baseball diamonds, a basketball court and a playground. Around three miles east is Ascarate Park, the largest public-use park in the county. It has an 18-hole golf course, a lake known for fishing and an aquatic center among its amenities. Clardy Fox Library offers English conversation classes and after-school programs.
Chico's Tacos is a local institution, and retail shopping is close by
Chico’s Tacos is an El Paso institution. There are five locations today, but the original is in Washington Park on Alameda Avenue. The cash-only restaurant’s specialty dish — three tightly rolled tacos submerged in a tomato-based sauce and smothered with cheese — has been featured on the Food Network show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” “You can’t go to El Paso and not go to Chico’s Tacos, because you’ll have a story to tell,” says Belinda Duran, a Realtor with Home Sweet Home. “And people are going to ask you about it.” 787 Coffee is known for rum-, whiskey- and tequila-infused beans made into lattes and other drinks. Just outside the neighborhood, Good Luck Cafe has served diner-style Mexican food since the 1960s. Though the neighborhood is short on retail shopping, Food King grocery store is in the community’s northeast corner. Other stores, like Ross Dress for Less, WSS and Melrose Family Fashions, are across Alameda Avenue in Fox Plaza Shopping Center.

Visit the El Paso County Coliseum and a local ice rink
Several sports events take place near the community. The El Paso County Coliseum hosts events like concerts and wrestling shows. In downtown El Paso, Southwest University Park is the home of the El Paso Chihuahuas minor league baseball team and El Paso Locomotive FC, a USL Championship soccer team. The University of Texas-El Paso, just over 5 miles away, plays home football games at the Sun Bowl each fall.
The El Paso Hockey Association ice rink offers public ice-skating sessions and hosts games for the El Paso Rhinos junior hockey team. Cory Herman, the association’s director, moved from Canada to play for the El Paso Buzzards, a now-defunct team in the Western Hockey League. He took over the Buzzards’ youth hockey program after suffering an injury and has helped it grow from 30 youth members to more than 600, plus over 150 participants in an adult league. “We are fortunate to get the support we do,” Herman says. “Our players get involved in the community as a way to give back. They volunteer and go to parades and visit different schools. It’s an unbelievable place.”

Close to downtown, Five Points and the Bridge of the Americas
Texas State Highway Loop 375, known locally as Cesar E. Chavez Border Highway, runs south of the neighborhood. Interstate 10 is to the north, while Interstate 110 sits just to the west. That road can take drivers onto the Bridge of the Americas, which leads into Mexico. Downtown El Paso is just over 3 miles away, and the increasingly popular Five Points Entertainment District is about 2 miles away. El Paso International Airport is less than 5 miles east, and Las Palmas Medical Center, a hospital with more than 300 beds, is just over 5 miles west. “We get a lot of traffic on weekends and Mexican holidays,” says Diana Torres-McCann, a Realtor with Vision Realty. “That’s when people come up from Mexico.” Sun Metro runs public transportation in the city, and bus stops are located throughout the neighborhood, particularly along East Paisano Drive and Delta Drive.
